Fieldrunners 1.3 Update has been Submitted

Fieldrunners was probably the best tower-defense title out on the AppStore for a number of months, and the developers have finally submitted the next update to Apple.

This update includes a few minor features plus two whole new maps.

You will be able to upload your highscores online to compare your skills around the world or with your neighbourhood.

Multiplayer mode has also been added, so we’ll have to see how this works when this is approved.

The developers have also joined in with DLC, allowing users to purchase two new maps via in-app purchasing for $0.99 each.

One of the new maps is called Frostbite:

And the other name Skyway:

We should hope to see this update appear before the end of the year.

EA Releases Need for Speed: Shift

EA have brought the popular arcade racing franchise Need for Speed to the iPhone, and have just released the second installment of the series.

The first was Undercover, which is very different from Shift content-wise.

Need for Speed: Shift is a professional racing game, with 20 licenced cars and 18 tracks to race on.

The controls are similar to Undercover – you tilt to steer and there’s auto-acceleration.  Unfortunately, these nifty controls won’t be much fun due to the fact that Need for Speed: Shift is a professional racer, therefore there’s no police.

It stands on the AppStore for $9.99, and due to the high-quality graphics, it weighs in at 179MB.  You can check it out now, and tell us how it compares to the current professional racing king: Real Racing

N.O.V.A.- Halo Clone by Gameloft is Out!

To accompany the many other clones out there on the AppStore, Gameloft have made a Halo clone – N.O.V.A.

It’s been in the making for some months now, and it’s finally hit the AppStore.  It comes with offline story mode and online death matches with up to four players.

The online play uses Gameloft’s LIVE! social networking system, so if you already have an account, starting an online match shouldn’t be a hassle.

Modern Combat’s successful control engine is used in NOVA.  The online environments are also seemingly large compared to Eliminate and Modern Combat.

Currently, it weighs in at just over 160MB and stands for $6.99:

Gameloft’s Avatar Out Now

Avatar was first previewed not so long ago by Gameloft, yet it’s already hit the AppStore, as promised on the 15th.

It features the basic story line over two decades from the film by James Cameron, in various 3D environments.

You take the role as a blue creature (an avatar) to fight your way through each level to reach the end of the story mode.

Gameloft have seemed to return to their usual $9.99 price tag, so you can judge for yourself whether this is worth it or not:

F1 2009 Game Hits the AppStore

There aren’t many professional racers out on the AppStore, and the small minority are excellent games.

To join them, The Codemasters have made a 3D racing game, which includes a couple of licenced features.

First up, it has the 17 official race tracks included in the F1 Championships.  Secondly, to race on the tracks, there’s all the of the licenced cars.

Controls are typical, tilt-to-steer and onscreen pedals for professional racing around the tight bends.  Whether you’re just a starter at racing, or a complete pro, they’ve included two game modes – Novice and Pro.

Some prefer F1 racing to arcade racers such as Need for Speed.  If you’re one of those, you can get the game here:

iPhone 2G & 3G Video Recorder On App Store

The envious iPhone 2G and 3G users who don’t want to jailbreak but want the 3GS video camera capabilities need be green no more.  To my astonishment, Apple has allowed a 3rd party developer to ‘unlock’ video capability inside the 3.1 firmware -  iVideoCamera was released on Saturday by Laan Labs for $0.99.  The video may be low resolution and stuttered at only 3fps but it’s a start and there’s an update already in the pipeline to improve frame rate and quality.

You could argue that old iPhone owners should have been given video capabilty natively with the 3.1 update, though presumably Apple left it out to entice users to upgrade to the new device under the guise of a RAM & processor issue (so where’s my numeric battery option I would retort!)  But this is Apple and so, as usual, we continue to pay up for the little things we want – at least this developer will have a happy Christmas!

Grab it before Apple realise they’ve let one slip through and evoke the kill-switch! :p

Thanks to loop4444 for bringing the app to our attention – hit the ‘read more’ link below to see his full review.

How Would You Change: iTunes Store pages?

Apple have already started (see here, if you don’t already know), but now it’s time for you to have a say! What would you add, take away, or change about iTunes Store pages? Whether it’s the app pages, music pages, videos, whatever – Just tell us!

New App Store iTunes pages

Apple have rolled this one out quietly… The iTunes Store has had a bit of a makeover (for the better, in my opinion) as you can see if you click on the picture below:

Screenshots are now larger, the app’s icon is bigger, the description has been moved to the top, and shortened (click “More…” to see the full description), and the “What’s New” section is easier to find with its big title and centred. Off the screenshot, there are the reviews (two sections, All reviews / Reviews for this version) and at the very bottom is “Other customers also bought…” with some helpful suggestions.

Although it does seem that these redesigns have been done specifically for the developer. A larger icon and more visible screenshots will lead to more sales, as that’s the first thing you see when you click on an app’s page. Large blocks of text are off-putting, and so have been shortened to make them “optional.” All in all, it’s a great update.

MiniGore Episode 4 Update Information!

Mountain Sheep, the developers of MiniGore, never rest.  After just recently updating MiniGore with a Christmas episode, they’ve got another in the works.

MiniGore is a simple, crazy dual-stick shooter where you fire aimlessly at small creatures called ‘furries’.  They come in small, medium or large sizes.   You are equipped with a shotgun and a grenade launcher to cause them much damage.

Here’s a list of the great new features in yet another update:

  • Co-Op Multiplayer over Bluetooth and Local WiFi
  • Lizzy and Ninja Man from Sway as new playable characters
  • A new guest star
  • A new level/ground to shoot on

That’s just the start of the list.  The developers wish to get the Lizzy and Ninja Man characters update as 3.5, before the end of the year.

Which update feature are you most excited for?

New Avatar Trailer by Gameloft

No, not the movie Avatar, but the iPhone version, coming soon to the AppStore.  Gameloft are the developers, and have released yet another trailer.

Avatar was first announced some time ago, and not much information had come with it.  Just regular screenshots of in-game footage.

The trailer below shows the mutliple environments to be included in the game, along with the wide variety of enemies to attack:

Movie-games don’t usually turn out great, but Gameloft seem to have that covered.  We’ll see how it survives on our iPod touches and iPhones when this lands in the AppStore on 15th December 2009.
