By this point, we’ve all played or at least seen instrumental arcade games on the iPhone and iPod touch. Tapulous’ Tap Tap Revenge dominated the category without any serious competition until EA’s hit Rock Band franchise came to the iPhone this October to give it a run for its money.
Today, relatively-unknown studio Arroyo released their take on the genre, Big Brain of Fire. We haven’t yet had a chance to put it through its paces, and the lack of downloadable content means that the game will have less replay value than competing titles (thought it makes up for this through the addition of free play mode), but we find it inspiring that a relative unknown would take on the likes of EA and Tapulous. The game’s cartoonish, almost absurd take on the genre should be a fun alternative if the mainstays have lost their luster. Gameplay video after the jump.

It’s surprising that this nifty little utility for Windows PCs (sorry, Mac users) has avoided our attention for so long, but not anymore. In case we weren’t the last ones that hadn’t heard about this, iPhone Folders by Bozhenov Artem is a great way to access the files on your iPod touch and iPhone from Windows. Because it hooks in as a Windows Explorer extension, there is no software to run once it’s installed: it just works. The iPhone or iPod touch just shows up like any other hard-drive, and the extension even includes support for displaying application icons for .app folders in thumbnail mode. It’s very slick, almost as if it was functionality that Apple forgot to ship.

Miss the click-wheel action and the simple interface of the classic iPod? Well don’t fret, because, if the announcement is to be believed, the team of Emilio Pelaez (coding) and Christian Baroni (graphics) will soon bring back the retro experience we’ve been missing (yes, original iPods now count as retro). Although we can’t say that we believe that Apple will ever approve this for sale on the official App Store, we look forward to buying this from the Cydia store for $1.99 when it is released in the next few weeks.

Dewan Payroda, better known to the internet world as AppStoreMod, describes himself as “EPIC!” and a provider of “professional tutorials.” While this may or may not be the case, Payroda has managed 9,000 subscribers on his YouTube channel where he does application reviews. AppStoreMod pioneered the somewhat tiresome UITabBarController applications taking over Cydia. However, both are fairly great accomplishments and the AppStoreMod application is available in the App Store for Free.

Nvidia’s CEO showed off their prototype tablet at a press conference recently and then proceeded to talk up his love for all things Apple. That’s a very nice beveled edge and recessed home button…
Update: it’s an ODM Tegra prototype tablet…
Then look no further. MacHeist has just broadcasted a live announcement of the 6 apps that are going to appear in the NanoBundle this year. MacHeist are known for having top quality indie apps in their bundles, and normally incredibly fair and cheap prices on the bundles – And this bundle is no exception.
Hit up the “read more” link to see the six apps and the VERY appetising price tag on them all…

Let’s say you’re a developer for ngmoco, just for the day! Now that one the most anticipated game of the year is on the App Store, it’s had some criticism and some praise and everyone gotten their chance to play with it (even if it was one offline game.)
I’d like to hear your thoughts on it: What you’d change to improve it or make it different? What would you add or take away? Why would you do those things? And we’ll see if everyone’s opinions match up!
