[Testing] Ubuntu Lusty Leopard

So, today I decided to actually make something I have had in my head for a while now.

Yes, it's ubuntu. Yes it looks like OS X (sort of). It has a working dock etc.

I am calling it Ubuntu Lusty Leopard.

It's mainly for those who love OS X and haven't given linux a second look ;)

I have made a Live CD version, you can download it from http://lustyleopard.org .

There's a Live DVD in the works with a lot more stuff too, so watch this space.

There's no reason you shouldn't be able to use this method to put it on a USB drive so you can take it out and about with you:

It's based on the Mac4Lin skin for emerald
and the dock is called avant

Well, I wanted to mess around with making a live cd too, so this seemed to make sense :) And the great thing is you can have a nice looking thing without having to install it! And if you are one of those people who don't want to actually install it, applying themes etc every time you boot is a pain in the rear :p

First Attempt: Got to the installer, started installing...Black screen.
Second Attempt: No so great. Won't boot Ubuntu. Can't retry install because "Could not find kernal image: linux" No boot CDs work now.

Now mind you, I think my CD drive might be messed up cuz it was making some weird noises. But as of now that comp is no working.

EDIT: Now that I've messed with it more I think that it is my CD drive.
EDIT2: Its loading the installer again. We'll see how it goes haha

simon i have 9 (17) seeds and 4 (23) peers. going between 30-60 kb/s. so i figure ill let it run overnight and itll be done much sooner and itll just keep running and ill let it seed until i have to go to school and then whenever i use my computer in school

Ubuntu is awesome. I would download Fedora, but I'm not allowed to partition my drive. That's why I installed Ubuntu using Wubi. It works great.

I'm downloading it right now and am gonna run it in a virtual machine under Windows for now. (Don't know if I can get on Ubuntu tonight, dad might come home early)

There is a tool called remastersys that lets you make Live CD/DVDs of your linux installation, and when you boot from the CD it is as if your installation is 'frozen in time' because it is just as it was when you made the live CD/DVD.

So yes, I applied a theme, installed the dock and made a Live CD. I was really just testing it out but people seem to like the result :)

Oh the dock won't work in a VM, because it needs hardware accelerated graphics.

But it will definitely work if you boot from the CD properly :)

Failing that, just try to overwrite with the new image, and it might prompt you.

That's because a liveCD can't use restricted drivers, because it requires a restart and the changes aren't saved after you reboot.

Should put the Ubuntu version in the description. Even though I already know what version it is, 8.04 Hardy, others might not and it's important to know.:p

I love this. I am using it on my laptop now. The only thing that held me away from linux was that I could never get my wireless card working. But I got it working here. I love the look of this.

Yes. If you upgrade to 8.10, you will keep your customization. All you have to do is select an option to keep your old xorg.conf files if there is one. (Got this off of ubuntuforums.org)

During the installation, I created a password (just "password" for now) and when It asks me to type in a password for administrative tasks, its says "Incorrect password"

I uninstalled then reinstalled the whole OS just to make sure it wasn't a spelling mistake.

The default password for this is 'password'. Try that, not whatever you put on the installer.

Yes, its on the first post.

Wubi has like, one limitation. A barely noticeable performance issue. (Although, hibernation isn't an option, and you're more prone to hard-reboots using Wubi. But, I haven't had an issue yet.

Just make a small 4GB partition to test it out. Then, when you're done, use the 8.10 liveCD and use gParted to remove it.
