simonrichards150 10-19-2008, 09:07 PM So, today I decided to actually make something I have had in my head for a while now.
http://www.ipodtouchfans.com/forums/imgcache/13911.png
Yes, it's ubuntu. Yes it looks like OS X (sort of). It has a working dock etc.
I am calling it Ubuntu Lusty Leopard.
It's mainly for those who love OS X and haven't given linux a second look ;)
I have made a Live CD version, you can download it from http://lustyleopard.org .
There's a Live DVD in the works with a lot more stuff too, so watch this space.
There's no reason you shouldn't be able to use this method to put it on a USB drive so you can take it out and about with you:
http://www.ipodtouchfans.com/forums/showthread.php?t=63281
If you decide to download it, and it will take a while because I am currently the only seed, could you please be so kind as to make a note of any errors or problems you run into so I can improve it, thanks.
This is based on Ubuntu 8.04 *Hardy Heron*
Steaps 10-19-2008, 09:08 PM Looks great Simon.

I'm in the same boat :(
If anyone can send simon $9 for a VPS, he can get a proper server and max it out thus it would take no time! :D
I'm poor and a minority so I can't do it :(

simonrichards150 10-20-2008, 11:59 AM Sorry about the speed guys, I am the only seed (obviously :p)
I am uploading to my server as we speak, it should be ready in about 2 hours.
EDIT: Though if anyone does want to help out with some £££ for a VPS then of course feel free, it would make it a lot faster ;)

vanden9 10-20-2008, 07:40 PM So is this just ubuntu with a skin/apps and a dock?
If so wont be a good idea to post a theme pack in in gnome look.. Or do it like ubuntu studio and download it from add/remove and install just like it..

Well, I wanted to mess around with making a live cd too, so this seemed to make sense :) And the great thing is you can have a nice looking thing without having to install it! And if you are one of those people who don't want to actually install it, applying themes etc every time you boot is a pain in the rear :p
ipodtouchhaxer 10-20-2008, 08:16 PM First Attempt: Got to the installer, started installing...Black screen.
Second Attempt: No so great. Won't boot Ubuntu. Can't retry install because "Could not find kernal image: linux" No boot CDs work now.
Now mind you, I think my CD drive might be messed up cuz it was making some weird noises. But as of now that comp is no working.
EDIT: Now that I've messed with it more I think that it is my CD drive.
EDIT2: Its loading the installer again. We'll see how it goes haha
x6blues 10-20-2008, 08:45 PM Omg, it works!
All like a charm. I dualbooted this fantastic creation of simon's with Vista. I'm actually crying right now cause this rocked my socks. Simon, you god you. Works great and is nice as hell. You just changed my life sir. I will definitely be donating to you for this fantastic creation!

Well I don't know how you would do it, unless you dont care about your current install in which case you could simply overwrite it with this one...

Yeah I dont care. Like at all. I messed it up so i had to reinstall in and i havent used it since.
should i just format the partition and use your LiveCD?S
Tman47 10-20-2008, 09:47 PM simon i have 9 (17) seeds and 4 (23) peers. going between 30-60 kb/s. so i figure ill let it run overnight and itll be done much sooner and itll just keep running and ill let it seed until i have to go to school and then whenever i use my computer in school

You can just install it using aptitude as normal.
SkaterGOD/DOOD23 10-22-2008, 05:15 AM Your Mum is a noob
You're cool.
Ex-Touch 10-22-2008, 04:29 PM Ubuntu is awesome. I would download Fedora, but I'm not allowed to partition my drive. That's why I installed Ubuntu using Wubi. It works great.
But, my real question for your Simon, is how you went about doing this? Like, did you just make a theme and apply it and burn it as an ISO for liveCD's?
I'm downloading it right now and am gonna run it in a virtual machine under Windows for now. (Don't know if I can get on Ubuntu tonight, dad might come home early)

There is a tool called remastersys that lets you make Live CD/DVDs of your linux installation, and when you boot from the CD it is as if your installation is 'frozen in time' because it is just as it was when you made the live CD/DVD.
So yes, I applied a theme, installed the dock and made a Live CD. I was really just testing it out but people seem to like the result :)
Oh the dock won't work in a VM, because it needs hardware accelerated graphics.
But it will definitely work if you boot from the CD properly :)
Ex-Touch 10-22-2008, 04:34 PM Yeah, I know. I just realized it was LiveCD. (Having a bit of amnesia, eh? Lol) I'll burn it to a disk that I have laying around in about 10 minutes.
shooter902 10-23-2008, 01:51 AM Thanks Simon! DL was fast...200Kb/s I seeded for 2 days :)
Did the install and tweaked it up with some of the programs I like, plus flash and Java then remastered it..It looks and works VERY cool!!
I do wish I could change the user name from "user" to something else..if I create a new user I lose the cool Maclike theme
Thanks again Simon...looking forward to the DVD :D

I wonder if there is a way to set a new user template sort of thing? I will have to look into that.

Not sure, isn't there an erase command somewhere?
Failing that, just try to overwrite with the new image, and it might prompt you.
YoungGeekGuy 10-23-2008, 01:58 PM Sexy desktop. I stopped using ubuntu about a month ago. But the background suits my parents mac really well:http://www.ipodtouchfans.com/forums/imgcache/14124.png

Guess so. Well, I'mma pop into U8.10 and see what's new, then I'll try to overwrite it with Lusty Leopard. See you in a few.
vanden9 10-25-2008, 06:07 AM I cant seem to find or load the dock on the live cd..
Ex-Touch 10-25-2008, 10:34 AM That's because a liveCD can't use restricted drivers, because it requires a restart and the changes aren't saved after you reboot.
EvanXTC 10-28-2008, 01:09 PM Should put the Ubuntu version in the description. Even though I already know what version it is, 8.04 Hardy, others might not and it's important to know.:p
micaheljcaboose 10-30-2008, 04:52 PM I love this. I am using it on my laptop now. The only thing that held me away from linux was that I could never get my wireless card working. But I got it working here. I love the look of this.
JonnySK 11-01-2008, 03:50 AM So this is based on Ubuntu 8.04, right? If I install this, then upgrade (using this method (http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/upgrading)) to Ubuntu 8.10, will all these "Mac-Like" features remain as they are?
BigDaveyJ 11-01-2008, 08:01 AM Once i get my laptop, i will get this! I'm not sticking to Windows, I'll just get Ubuntu and use this, or rocket dock and all that jazz.

Yeah, was wondering as well and is the whole dock and everything part of a theme or what?
Ex-Touch 11-01-2008, 02:14 PM Yes. If you upgrade to 8.10, you will keep your customization. All you have to do is select an option to keep your old xorg.conf files if there is one. (Got this off of ubuntuforums.org)

KlicKlack 11-01-2008, 02:58 PM ok people ... i dont fail.. and plan on not too... yes i am lazy to read so i ask if this can run on window so zip it...
Well you do "fail" for asking if an OS runs on another OS, you also "fail" for using the wrong conjugation of "to", you ran into another "fail" for ending on a pause and you "fail" once more for not using a period in that entire part. The three periods are used to show a pause between ONE thought, not three different ones.

Ok, that's great. Really - it is. Just stop spamming this thread and let us bask in the glow of Lusty Leopard.
Ex-Touch 11-01-2008, 03:10 PM Well. I would've used it if it was a wubi thing, because I cannot partition my drive.

Can't as in even if you wanted to, your computer wouldn't let you? Or can't as in you don't know how? The install of all Ubuntu's have built in partitioners.

I uninstalled then reinstalled the whole OS just to make sure it wasn't a spelling mistake.
Is this a bug???

The default password for this is 'password'. Try that, not whatever you put on the installer.
JonnySK 11-04-2008, 12:11 PM Thanks, Got it working.
This is Awesome, By the way.
Ex-Touch 11-04-2008, 02:45 PM Can you install this inside windows? Like, does it give you an option when at the installation screen?

What do you mean, inside Windows? Like that 'wubi' thing for those who are too scared to partition? No you have to partition a drive to install this.
breakkdown 11-04-2008, 03:32 PM did you use these instructions

No.
But I just had a look and it seems it would come out to a similar result.
Ex-Touch 11-04-2008, 03:49 PM I can't partition my drive. It's my dad's computer. This is why I have Wubi.

breakkdown 11-10-2008, 08:45 PM I can't partition my drive. It's my dad's computer. This is why I have Wubi.

Yes, its on the first post.
Ex-Touch 11-11-2008, 06:43 PM Wubi has like, one limitation. A barely noticeable performance issue. (Although, hibernation isn't an option, and you're more prone to hard-reboots using Wubi. But, I haven't had an issue yet.
ipodtouch1234 11-13-2008, 05:07 PM can I burn this to a dvd instead?
Ex-Touch 11-13-2008, 05:44 PM Of course.
