I dont really use linux regularly as a desktop OS, but as a server OS it kicks ass! I bought a VPS at the same time as a friend of mine, except I bought one with ubuntu, and he bought one with server 2003 installed. Mine now has a proxy with ads to generate revenue thats had about 2000 page views since it was set up 2 days ago, and my friend sill can't figure out how to set up IIS (i suspect this is because IIS is a piece of crap, as I have experienced for myself in the past).

Linux ftw! :D

That is why I am excited about this forum (linux specific), so that once a linux client for the Ipod Touch is discovered I'll find out right quick.

No I definitely mean Performance Edition (http://thepiratebay.org/tor/4055064/Windows_XP_Performance_Edition_February_2008_-_English). Its a stripped down version of XP with all the bs that you dont need uninstalled. You should try it out. Hey Alex,
Let me start off by saying congratulations on the successful move (hopefully no bumps) to Ubuntu! I've been running it for about 2-3 months now, and have enjoyed my experience with it. I'm in the IRC Room (as Gabe_G23, I want to change my current screen name here to that by the way) and I try to get on whenever I have access to a computer. You can always private message me on the boards too if you need help.

I don't know everything about Ubuntu, but my friend is running an Ubuntu server, and he's helped me a lot also. I have a couple questions for you also:

What is your desktop environment? GNOME?
Are you familiar with command line?
Do you know how to compile?
Do you program any?
What do you think your primary uses will be? Listening to music? Surfing the Internet? etc.
What are your computer specifics? - RAM, HDD, Processor speed, graphics, etc.

This kind of information will help me determine how to help you. :)

Soorbob:
Hey Soorbob! I find Ubuntu (Desktop edition) to be very stable on my crappy (laptop) computer. It runs smoothly and has a decently-fast startup. It can do everything that my old Windows XP could do (except not as much gaming support, but you can always partition your disk or use WINE, etc., not as much support for drivers by the way, but most of them are supported). You should be slightly familiar with command line and how to compile also to be running Ubuntu.

Unlike windows, the chance of running into a virus, malware, or spyware are very thin. You would be running a UNIX operating system, and the task of replication across the operating system (like normal viruses tend to do) would be extremely hard! This is because for many occasions, accessing files, copying files, etc. require you to be 'root' or a super user (access to everything). If you're not root, you don't have permissions to access the file, and therefore the virus cannot replicate itself. Another reason Linux - and other UNIX like operating systems don't get viruses is because corrupting, or changing any critical system files is again, not allowed without root access. Something windows gives its administrator users.

Depending on your specifications, you can have enhanced 3D effects, multiple workspaces, and more!
I found that the switch to Ubuntu was a great decision by me and that I'll stick with UNIX associated operating systems for the rest of my life. :) If you have any more questions - you know who I am on the IRC and you can also Private Message me.

Hope to talk with you later!

Could I please have the name your wireless card (If you don't know, open Terminal and type 'lspci' or 'lspci | grep wireless' - I recommend the latter, and give me the results)? Also, if you're running GNOME go into Applications>Restricted Drivers and tell me what you see there.

Oh boy, this sounds fun!

Maybe not, try this, it's a simple reinstall:

NOTE: You must run these command as root (using sudo or logging in as root with sudo su for that specific shell).
In terminal:
(sudo) apt-get remove pciutils

Then, once it's done, do:
(sudo) apt-get install pciutils

After this, try 'lspci' again.

EDIT: I forgot, apt-get install requires you to be online(otherwise use Ethernet connection for about 2 minutes). Also, you can try to search for pciutils in your package manager, if it shows up (which I doubt), you can stick in the LiveCD which you installed Ubuntu with and it'll install.

I was dual booting with Vista and Ubuntu, but earlier today I completely took Vista off because I hated it.
Best decision ever, freed up like 230 much needed gigabytes of disk space. I was down to about 140 megabytes and Ubuntu runs so smoothly now that I have extra space.

Windows 7 is much better. I would give Windows another try. ;)

Ubuntu is great, but it hates my laptop. Something never works right and I'm too lazy to fix it. :(

Yeah, I'll have to give it a shot sooner or later. I don't really feel like forking out the dough right now to buy it, and none of my friends have it yet, so I can't try it now. It looks pretty cool, though.

Ubuntu works amazingly on my Inspiron though. Everything is flawless and required no extra drivers or anything to run. Plus I just like the way it works, and how visually customisable it is. (Thats a major deciding factor for me... lol)

Windows 7 is great. And it's visually customizable also, just not as much as Ubuntu. :D

you can have mac os x on a regular pc...!
i have tried to do it but there were problems with some drivers...
search on google!

I know you can, but it is really unstable.

I want a really stable machine (if only I can afford a Mac), so I am just going to have Windows 7 and dual boot that with Linux (9.10)

Hackintoshing really isn't unstable at all..........You just have to be careful about when Apple rolls out updates....

And that's what I don't like about Hackintoshing, I know a lot about but you have to be careful when Apple has an update for us. I will just give it a go anyway though. First, I have to save some money for a high spec laptop though (less then $800), any suggestions?

It isn't high-spec, but the HP DM3Z? That is what I'm going for...

And yes. I'm running Ubuntu 9.04, and Ubuntu 9.10 Netbook Remix. On an HP Mini 1000.

I need an upgrade.
