First before I start might I say the post limits on there really sucks and makes it hard for me to make a long guide such as this.

Ok you just resized that Windows XP sucks and your to poor to buy a Mac what do you do well you use linux there are many Linux distro and i will help you pick one...

What is Linux in my mind
Linux is what you make it.
Its a highly customizable operating system, a little known competitor to MS windows. It can look exactly like more commonly used OS's or can be something unique to you, for the uses you want it to be used for, usually with no added cost.It comes in all shapes and sizes and caters for many peoples needs, from the uber programmer to the basic desktop user, and should be considered by all as a serious alternative to other operating systems,

How to download and burn Linux to a disk...


Pick a Linux Distro
Go to the offical site of the Linux distro or a 3ed party website like LinuxTracker (http://linuxtracker.org/)(need a bittorrent client...)
Save the Disk Image(.ISO) to your download folder or your desktop...
Use a software burn App that has support to burn A disk Image like ImgBurn (http://www.free-codecs.com/download/ImgBurn.htm)
1. Load ImgBurn.
2. Switch to 'Write' mode.
3. Insert Disc in Burner.
4. Select Image to burn.
5. Click 'Write' button.
You have just burn the iso now lable it and place it back into your cd drive...

Pick A Linux Distro

Now unlike OSX and Windows, with Linux you have so many "flavors" to pick from...This can be over welling to many people who are used to have maybe 1 or 2 to pick from but never fear that what this guide is for...


Desktop Environment
Desktop Environment are a little hard to explan to windows users but I shall try... Like I said befor Linux is really about chose and you can pick what you want is your OS... There are tons of Desktop Environment to pick from...Most of you use the Explorer shell built into Windows... built Linux has tons of you to pick from so your not forced into anything.... You can install any Desktop Environment on any linux disrto You can pick from

Ubuntu

3. Hardware Recognition: I would have to say that Ubuntu is by far the best Linux variant available today for hardware recognition.. I and many others have installed Ubuntu on tons of PC and they support or can easily be installed...

Not only does it update system stuff but installed applications as well (as long as they are in the repositories). Everything from the kernel to the browser, this tool is a must have to keep your machine up to date.

PCLinuxOS

This is also a Popular distro,it does some thing different than ubuntu and some thing the same..
PCLinuxOS is an English only live CD initially based on Mandrake Linux that runs entirely from a bootable CD. Data on the CD is decompressed on the fly, allowing up to 2GB of programs on one CD including a complete X server, KDE desktop, OpenOffice.org and many more applications all ready to use. In addition to the live CD, you can also install PCLinuxOS to your hard drive with an easy-to-use livecd-installer. Additional applications can be added or removed from your hard drive using a friendly apt-get front end via Synaptic.
1. It's drop dead gorgeous, and very professional looking.
2. The Beryl/Compiz 3D acceleration effects are terrific--much better than any other distro I've tried.
3. The repository has over 5000 packages, and updates are incredibly prompt, smooth, and easy to do. Synaptic, the GUI package manager works easily and reliably with the repository's RPM packages. Dependency issues are usually well handled. All the development programs and libraries are up to date.
4. The PCLinuxOS community is positive and helpful. Documentation is excellent. Support is excellent.
It near the same pro as ubuntu so if you dident like ubuntu or it's Partner Projects or dont like Debian the PCLinuxOS is for you...

openSUSE

After spending sometime nothing to long maybe a few months in linux you may feel you want to evolve your linux skills..In my view it's the most polished and professional looking Linux distro for someone looking for a new disto.. Overall I think SuSE is decent for a person who is tech savy but still new to Linux.

The openSUSE project is a community program sponsored by Novell. Promoting the use of Linux everywhere, this program provides free, easy access to openSUSE, a complete Linux distribution. The openSUSE project has three main goals: make openSUSE the easiest Linux for anyone to obtain and the most widely used Linux distribution; leverage open source collaboration to make openSUSE the world's most usable Linux distribution and desktop environment for new and experienced Linux users; dramatically simplify and open the development and packaging processes to make openSUSE the platform of choice for Linux developers and software vendors.

But be worn it has the worst support from the community as it has no official forum...

THis is the new linux distro I just love Sabayon blew me away with I first load it....It is the best out of the box OS ever....
Sabayon Linux is a live DVD designed to transform a computer into a powerful Gentoo Linux system in less than 5 minutes. Gentoo Linux is a Linux distribution powered by a software install manager engine called "Portage". Besides functioning as a live DVD, Sabayon Linux can also be installed on a hard disk, acting effectively as an easy-to-use Gentoo installation disk. The live DVD includes a large range of desktop environments and open source software applications, such as KDE, GNOME, XFce, Fluxbox, KOffice, OpenOffice.org, FreeNX, amaroK, Kaffeine, etc.

Im running Slax Linux from a CD right now. It is VERY different that Vista!!
And i cant figure out how to set up and connect tot my wireless network. But nevermind. Its pretty cool.

And im gonna try BackTrack soon! (LOL anyone know what thats for? A prize for the winner :D)

You should also tell people that it takes time to actually get adjusted to and learn Linux :\

Installing via Synaptic or Add/Remove is easy.

Compiling a source and installing, not so easy.

Linux is not Better than Windows or Mac COMPLETELY. Just in some cases. Each OS is better at one thing than others.

You put a lot of Positive points, bit too much, give some credit to the other OS's? :)

It depends on your skill level and your needs in a OS.

Also I did talk about ubuntu Package manager. and Compiling a source and installing is not all that hard in basic it's just copy and pasting in most cases from a web site into a terminal.

after trying a bunch of different linux distros....i would have to say, i always come back to Ubuntu. You never forget your roots!

You should post an arcticle on ways of installing linux.

Easiest way for Ubuntu, is Wubi.

It installs like a program and can be un-installed like a program.

Just most are just a step by step gui and a icon of a live cd that says install. Other more hardcare Distro that are text/network basied there not that much to it. and a rare case of Wubi.

But all you had to do is run the cd inside of windows.

I dual-boot Ubuntu and WinXP, since I couldn't get Hackint0sh to work.

Oh, you gave up too easily. Hackintoshes require hours of fiddling, but it's worth it.

Running Linux on a Mac is a lot more fun.
