Can't get Linux Mint (YES IT'S UBUNTU) to boot from USB in persistent mode

I tried ubuntu first, got it running the first try, but I want Linux Mint 5. It's basically ubuntu with some changes, has more preinstalled software that is hard to get otherwise etc.
I tried AT LEAST 10 GUIDES ON THE INTERNET, succeeded in booting it, but failed at persistent mode. IT JUST WON'T DO IT.
I am quite experienced in computers, intermediate in linux.
It seems that there is something wrong with the editing of syslinux.cfg to get it in persistent mode. I tried every method, but nothing.
PLEASE HELP!
