You don't need an OS, you just need a bios that supports booting from USB, which I doubt your old comp will. I also doubt it'll be runnable on usb 1/1.1.

USB 1/1.1 is not an issue, but you are right that the motherboard may not support booting directly from USB, if not you can get a floppy disk that will start the process and then hand over to the USB.

Depends on how much ram there is, if theres not enough then it'll have to use a swap, and it'll be a pain. And boot up times will be through the roof. But ya.

You WILL have to partition in order to install on such a small hard drive for any up-to-date/current Operating Systems.

Actually, linux is usually ok on laptops, but sometimes you might have some issues, normally with either display drivers or wireless cards.

Yeah with restricted drivers available it's much easier.

i was thinking in ading Damn Small Linux, And delete the windows partition, plus adding an external HDD but i saw that it only got 48mb of RAM so i think it's no even worth the try

to clarify you cant SYNC your ipod in linux but you can put music on it, on ubuntu and other debial based systems open a terminal and type in sudo apt-get intstall gtkpod
enter your password and let it install.
you can then open gtkpod and add folders. add your music folder. press load ipod. let it find your ipod. drag the music over. press save changes. it has an ugly gui but at least it works
