Oops. Jordan Hubbard, Director of Apple's Unix Technology Group, made a boo boo. The slide above was pulled from the deck presented last week at the LISA (Large Installation System Administration) conference. Up until now, Apple had only been willing to say that OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard would be ready "in about a year" -- that was back in early June at WWDC. You just know that this will have Steve fuming given Apple's tight control over information. One thing is perfectly clear: the race is on for both Redmond (rumored to be shooting for a mid-2009 Windows 7 launch) and Cupertino, nobody wants to be second with their next gen OS release.

I still announced it first, and who needs a source, all that matters is that it comes out.

Q1 of 2009 could be April though.. If I waited to buy a Mac just to get Snow Leopard, they'd've probably already released a 3rd gen iPhone..

Will the Snow Leopard update cost £80? (I think that's how much OSX updates cost?)

I honestly wouldn't worry too much about it. Leopard is a great OS and works just fine. Snow Leopard is based more around the corporation and professional side of the Mac. If you don't already know, it upgrades to a 64 bit operating system, meaning for me video projects look sharper and cleaner, making editing that much nicer. It now has Grand Central, a wonderful processor plant, utilizes the multi-cores more efficiently and uses every power that it can bring out. There are a bunch of other little things, but honestly the most I see an average user utilizing would be the 64 bit.

But is that hardware or software upgrade?

I could buy a new MBP for Xmas and then update Snow Leopard in April or whenever and get the 64 Bit features out of it?

It's all software. To be honest, the older gen MacBooks and MBP's are all 64 bit compatible, but the OS was simply 32 bit. The new ones are too. The update will simply "turn on" the 64 bit capabilities. With Grand Central, it still uses the same cores that are included, but runs in the background to utilize them fully.

I asked my parents for a mac, and i might get it, but i dont want to have to pay to upgrade to this, when it'll be included with every mac thereafter >.<
