if you're on photoshop, when you go to create a new image, itll let you choose between a solid white background or a transparent one. the transparent ones look like a checker board is the background

I do this: set the part you want alpha a complete different color from any other in your icon, then go to layer>transparency>color to alpha

select the color you used and hit ok. it will turn alpha.

or go to layer>transparency>add alpha channel
thne use the eraser tool to make alpha.

You can't use paint for this. Paint doesn't have an alpha channel. If you don't have or (like me) can't afford photoshop pro, the GIMP is a great photo editor that is made to mimic photoshop. It is totally free, just google it. It works the same way, when you make a new image, just check the "transparent background" button.

If you already have the image, you have to select the white region by color, make it a new layer, and then make that layer transparent.

P.S. If you're having trouble with it, send me the icon (as an attatchment to the e-mail address below) and I will alpha it. It might take a while though- I HAVE *****ing VISTA
