You need to give a little more information to help, like which programs failed you. For older DVDs, DVD Decryptor and DVD Shrink are still viable. For newer DVDs, you need to go with DVD FAB HD Decryptor. Google these free programs.
If you are willing to pay, AnyDVD is very effective.
The above is for regular DVDs. For HD DVDs, the process is much more complicated. Again Google "ripping HD DVD" for more information.

I just use DVD Decrypter, because I like to rip .iso.
For ripping to my iPod, I use Fair Use Wizard 2 and Xilisoft iPod Converter.
