Let's say some one stole your ipod......
And when the bastard pluggs it in his computer, BAM! the ipod sends the IP adress and other information of the person that took it.
And the ipod would lock itself and demand a password to function, and when it loggs on an wifi hotspot and the software finds out that its missing
No it doesent stop global warming and all problems in the world:p
But it would be an awesome app:rolleyes:

how would the ipod know that it was stolen???
when logging on the internett
the same way as the "installer" app searces look's updates, it would find out when logging on the server to the app.
i had this kind of system on my PSP and it was great.

There is a website which offers this service for gadgets. It's called www.gadgettrak.com (http://www.gadgettrak.com/). Only problem is, it supports all iPod models apart from iPod Touch. :(

Perhaps it wouldn't have to. Maybe the program could just "ping home" each time it's connected to the internet. In the pings, could be th city, address,IP address and ISP, which could be logged on the home pc. Or perhaps the software could be dormant, or deactivated until set of by software that's on the home pc. If your Ipod is stolen, just hit "Find" in the software, and the next time the ipod logs onto the net, your hope pc pulls in the info..
Cool Idea

great idea it should be better if the person plugs into there comp.itunes will say it will require a password to go in
bec ppl dont only use 1 comp
thats y
and he canot access the ipod now unless he enters the password
so the ipod will say wwhen he slides to open please type in password in itunes and it like disables it
ps
its better the the passcode on it now
but apple has to do it

this could be done, just as the RSS reader which automatically updates every 5 minutes, silently in the background. Could send IP and information in the network connected to to an email, or such, to be browsed by owner of ipod if in case of a stolen ipod... neat idea, i was thinking of something like this.

Yes maybe in that way it would be easier to track whith more access points logged. Instead of bricking it at once
hah! That's brilliant!
I am sure that is not an impractical idea for an application.

This is how i would like it to be... il explain it to you in a story...
Ok, this dude jacks you iPod, and when (If you got a password on it) he tries to unlock it, he messes up, and it asks you to enter another password (Even more complex on). He messes up again, and then the iPod goes in total lock down, and it ask you to connect to YOUR computer and open up iTunes. He plugs it in and then it say something like "This iPod is not connect to its main computer, and your IP has been sent to the owner". The guy thinks "Oh #$%#...". The iPod then shuts down and wont power up. You then get the guys IP when you open up iTunes, and it will have as much info it can get from the computer.
You find out the guys name, kick his ass and you got your iPod back!
Complicated! = Really SECURE!!!!

Maybe it could me a modded add on for the Passcode Lock that is already on the iPod Touch and iPhone...
After the lock has locked someone out for the 3rd time then you get and E-Mail with all the IP info and the option to do a total lock down from your PC...
i.e. you get an E-Mail that tells you that someone has atempted to open your iPod with out the proper passcode, do you with the lock down the iPod (YES) or (NO)...
After be able to use the same message to unlock it again, do you wish to unlock iPod (YES) or (NO)...

I was actually going to post something like this until I saw this thread. This is an application that I would really value and I hope someone makes it. I would imagine it being more passive however and not really alerting anyone when they hooked it up to itunes but rather just passively sending an email to the owner. If a company or person developed this app that worked well I would pay money for it if it included a way to easily get an actual street address from the ip. Does anyone know any free way to get street address from someone's ip? There is whois searches for websites but I don't think it applies to individual computers.
