Hey all,
I'm looking forward to the impending release of PSX4All for the iPhone, and in lieu of this I designed a possible controller layout. The left hand side would have a virtual analog nub, with the dot representing where your finger is placed and the larger circle representing the navigation area.

Yeah, i would imagine that it would be something like that, I just hope that the buttons fade away when not in use. If not they would have to be much smaller than your layout. Cant wait for this emulator, anyone have any idea of the release date?

No matter what, I fear that it is going to be very awkward. Hopefully not to difficult to get used to though. Hmmm that second design is good, its a bit cramped though
I'll make one just to test.

Some games don't require the second analog (such as games that were released prior to the Dual Shock era). That's why I personally am hoping both options will be available.
Badabing.
The left thumb needs to press buttons too.
That way it isn't so cramped.

Oh wait, forgot Start/Select etc.
Fix on the way.
Here's the fix.
Not sure how I feel about it.

I just hope the buttons arent ridiculously huge and get in the way of the game, like gpsphone.
i think it should be like the NES layout, where you can see what your doing, and your not continuosly looking under your thumb. and the screen is in the middle. there should be an option to change if you have full screen or not.

with the option to have full screen or centered screen

Yeah they should position the animation (game) screen so you can see what you are doing a little bit easier.

Yeah have you checked Zodttd's site there is a thread with a bunch of other cool controller mock-ups there too. One of them looks really professional.

Yeah I have to agree with you there the screen has to be posistioned. As regards to the analog sticks, its not the end of the world and it means that there is more space

Im loving that mockup.
I also like the first mockup in this thread (Which will most likely be used over the details oned due to simplicity in implementation... ie.. it involves no changes in controller view state)

didnt the ps1 originally ship with no analog controlers? so technically the first mockup in this thread would work right?

Correct :)
http://i12.tinypic.com/87l8s5e.jpg
I assume it will have the following buttons:
up
down
Left
right
upleft
upright
Downleft
downright
Triangle
square
x
circle
L1
L2
R1
R2
select
start
menu
Two joysticks are unneccesary, and would be more like D-pads anyway. The PSP-style is pretty impossibe to code, so dont get your hopes up.

90%(made that up but would be about right) don't use the second analog. Also depending on the style of game i think a different controller layout would be best eg. Racing games you need X, [], O, and d-pad or analog. but for a shooter a lot used R1 for fire so that would need to be easy accessable. It would be awesome if we manually drag buttons around to the perfect place for the game we are playing at the time. This wouldn't be something i expect in an early release but would be nice in a later release.

Today I had an idea.
Correct me when I'm wrong but as I've understood it the problem whith the analog controller is that it would be to hard to programm and would slow the iPod down too much.
So why not make an 8-way controller which is controlled like an analog one.
You would have a ball in a circle which you could drag around, and whereever that ball is(maybe on the left button) it would go that way.
This probably wouldn't slow down the iPoT too much because there are only 8-ways.
My problem with gpsphone has always been the fact that you have to stay in the circle where the arrows are (and while I was playing I often accidently touched outside of the circle).
This problem would be solved if it is possible to port my idea.

I agree that it would be awsome to be able to have custom layouts where you can drag certain buttons where you need them. It would be great if it was like P64 where you can create one for each game if you wanted.

I don't think you should start designing the controllers just yet. We don't even know whether or not controller changing is supported or how the controllers should be designed. So I would just wait until the App is released, otherwise you're wasting your time. ;)

We've established that it's very unlikely that it would ever work.

The beta released just used an edited version of the first gpSPhone skin.
The difference being the 8 way dpad controller design was used for the 4 PSX hardbuttons with the 4 buttons inbetween to be used for combos. This is how it was in the original pictures posted. They weren't analog sticks, they were 4 buttons + 4 combo buttons. :P
I also added L2 and R2 controller buttons. If someone makes a really nice controller skin that I will use in psx4iphone, then I will gladly give beta access in return for the artwork. The skin/overlay requires the following buttons:
L1 L2
MENU
R2 R1
8-way dpad
4 hardbuttons, and combo regions for neighboring buttons.
SELECT and START
where can I find the .txt coordinates for the PSX control overlay? Once I have that, I can get to work on those first controllers.
