Ok, so here goes. Are you tired of that dull, ugly, pale blue skin that comes on all of your apps? Well, now theres a solution! To change all bars in your ipod to look something like this,

you need to follow these steps.

Note: If you just want to change everything to black, scroll to the bottom for an easier solution..


REMEMBER: Do this at your own risk!

Windows Guide

Step 1: Heres what you need:
-Windows
-Jailbroken iPod on 1.1.1 (1.1.2 works too, im 99% sure)
-iPhoneShop-0.6.jar (can be downloaded here (http://iphoneshop.googlecode.com/files/iPhoneShop-0.6.jar))
-Some time on your hands

Step 2:
- Make a folder on your desktop or wherever called artwork. In this folder, create another one called pngs. ALSO, place your iPhoneShop-0.6.jar file in the artwork folder, not the pngs.

Step 3: FTP (SSH) into your ipod, and go to this directory: /System/Library/Frameworks/UIKit.framework/. From here, find and copy the file called Other.artwork directly into your artwork folder.

Also, Copy the Other.artwork file again someplace else on your PC, as a backup

Step 4: Now heres where it starts to get tricky. Go to Start>Run>cmd to open the command line. now you must navigate to the artwork file. To do this type this into the command prompt:

cd (the listing for your artwork file here)

so, for example, i would type cd C:\Documents and Settings\John Smith\My Documents\iPod Touch\artwork cause thats where my artwork folder is. to find this directory, just look at the address bar in explorer. Hit enter in Command Prompt when you finish, and the directory listing should change.

Now first make sure you have the other.artwork file, the iPhoneShop.jar file, and the empty pngs folder all in the artwork folder before you continue. Also, make sure the Command Prompt is pointing at where your artwork folder is located.

Step 5: if everythings where it should be, now copy and paste this line into your command prompt:

java -jar iPhoneShop-0.6.jar ARTWORK Other.artwork export pngs

If everything is where it should be, your Command prompt should start scrolling through a lot of lines. In the end, if you did everything ok, it should say something like the exported pngs are located in the appropriate directory.

Step 6: Now in explorer, go into your pngs file. If everything worked, you should see A Lot of pngs images in there. here (thanks to Modmyifone.com) is what most of the relevant images mean:

Other-ver111_206.png - right side of bottom half of add alarm
Other-ver111_209.png - 4 lines in middle of add alarm
Other-ver111_210.png - 3 squares in middle of add alarm

Other-ver111_230.png - bar that shows up on top of circle when deleting things
Other-ver111_247.png - shadow at bottom of the last clock and at bottom of page in world clock

Other-ver111_269.png - when viewing contacts, the highlight for the current letter
Other-ver111_270.png - when viewing contacts, the highlight for the letter spacers
Other-ver111_273.png - highlight of current tab selected in phone, google maps, etc
Other-ver111_276.png - Spacer for tabs in phone, google maps, etc
Other-ver111_298.png - overlay of opposite the selected on/off switch
Other-ver111_310.png - beginning curve of the color of ON when it is selected in Setting
Other-ver111_312.png - the color of ON when it is selected in Setting
Other-ver111_313.png - the color of ON when it is selected for Airplane Mode
Other-ver111_315.png - the color of OFF when it is selected
Other-ver111_323.png - highlight when you click on an email/text/song etc
Other-ver111_331.png - left side of timer
Other-ver111_332.png - middle of timer
Other-ver111_333.png - right side of timer
Other-ver111_335.png - spacer in timer
Other-ver111_336.png - overlay of minutes/seconds in timer
Other-ver111_338.png - background of minutes/seconds in timer


Now i would not recommend changing all of these. To change the bar for most of the apps, you should only change the following


Other-ver111_4.png - bottom half of search bar in safari and google maps
Other-ver111_97.png - top half of search bar in safari and google maps
Other-ver111_119.png - bottom bar in mail, google maps and portrait safari
Other-ver111_120.png - bottom bar in landscape safari
Other-ver111_184.png - top bar for the apps
Other-ver111_187.png - top bar when adding calendar event, mail contact, google maps bookmark, clock city, text message contact



Step 7: Edit these pngs however youd like, doing so at your own risk

Note: File dimensions must not be changed!

Step 8: When you have changed these images to your satisfaction, save them and make sure they are all still located in your pngs file with everything else. Now, back in your command prompt, make sure your still pointing at the artwork file, and copy and paste this in and press enter:

java -jar iPhoneShop-0.6.jar ARTWORK Other.artwork import pngs

If you did this correctly, things should start scrolling again and whatnot. If it says import successful or whatever, you did it right. Now look into your pngs folder, you should see a NEW Other.artwork file. (Dont use the one inside the artwork folder, thats still the original.

Replace this new Other.artwork folder into your ipod where you found the old one, set permissions to 755 and restart your ipod to see if it worked.

Step 9: Now youre gonna have to change all the default.pngs locating in the application's folders so the colors correspond, etc. Included at the bottom are black Defaults. Permissions need to be changed to 755, of course.

Step 10: To change the buttons in Safari, iPod, or any other app these are located in that app's /Applications folder. i.e. the buttons in Safari are found in /Applications/MobileSafari.app

Black Skin

If you want to cheat and just get straight to a refreshing black setting, Just replace the attached (blackartwork.zip) Other.artwork file in /System/Library/Frameworks/UIKit.framework/ and set its permissions. Then you have to change the default.png (Step 9) with the separate ones on your ipod (blackDefaults.zip), just go to the individual applications folder and replace it, setting permissions to 755. Ive attached this as well, also with a red safari progress bar and a cool black safari icon.

Hopefully I didnt miss anything here. Major props to theagent for getting this whole thing started. If you need help, obviously, pm me, and good luck!

Some .artwork files wont export due to some incompatible stuff, for example the keyboard-common.artwork.

i'd expect so, but i think just as long as you get the 6 i listed above you should have any problems. just make sure everythings together when you make a new other.artwork file, or else you'll have some problems..

i used photoshop for it, but you really could just use paint based on the 'complexity' of the images your editing. In photoshop, you can change the hue/saturation to whatever you want for every color on the spectrum. maybe sometime ill make some different colors, but im a bit tired right now lol.

I'm not even sure how to extract teh artwork on my computer. The .artwork extension opens a CD label printing program I have, but that program can't read the file.

i had 1.1.1, and skipped manually doing it cuz i liked the black theme you made, and it did not transfer all the way and messed up my ipod, so i had to restore. i ended up jailbreaking to 1.1.2. im not gonna take anymore chances until they have a secure way of doing this like in an app or under customize..

Mac Guide

Note: This is really just a reworded version of modmyifone.com’s tutorial, seeing as how I’ve never used a mac haha.

Again, Do This At Your Own Risk


Step 1: Heres what you need:
-A Mac
-Jailbroken iPod on 1.1.1 (1.1.2 works too, im 99% sure)
-iPhoneShop-0.6.jar (can be downloaded here (http://code.google.com/p/iphoneshop/downloads/list))
- Some time on your hands

Step 2:

- Start by putting everything in a folder called artwork, which I will store on my Desktop. I recommend you do the same, unless you are decent enough at command line stuff to know where to change paths, etc. So put your .artwork file and the iPhoneShop-0.6.jar file in that folder. Also, create a blank folder in there called pngs. This is where the images from within your .artwork file will wind up.

- Open up Terminal (Applications>Utilities>Terminal) and type,

cd ~/Desktop/artwork

-If you have multiple users on your computer, type:

cd /Users/Your_User_Name/Desktop/artwork


Step 3:
-FTP into your ipod, and go to this directory: /System/Library/Frameworks/UIKit.framework/. From here, find and copy the file called Other.artwork directly into your artwork folder.

would be a great idea for someone to show us an example with setting different parts of the browser to certain colors so we can tell what changes exactly what

the descriptions pretty much tell all except it gets a bit tricky with 4 and 97. Think of looking at your safari, at ipodtouchfans.com perhaps. 4 will change the top half of just that little top bar, and 97 will change the bottom half of that top and the rest of it when you are typing in a link or searching on google. So 4 and 97 need to go seamlessly together. When im making mine, ill make one big image, then separate it itno 4 and 97. Sorry, this is kinda long winded lol.

I'm replying this post to see if you can help me with a little problem that i don't know if it's normal due to the modification of the artwork file. First, the top bar of every application when they start stays like the original for a while until it fully loads and changes to black, i don't know if it's related with any issue this modification may have with firmware 1.1.2 or if i have to do something to fix this.
the other question is related with the top bar font color of safari, do you know where i can change that? After the mod to black the window title font of safari that displays the webpage name is black and very difficult to read.

Hope you can provide some fixes i really appreciated.

Ok I will check the permissions for the file tomorrow, i'm going to try and change what i want by myself (a little challenge :D) i didn't see the message you've posted above because it's almost 02:00 AM here in Portugal and I was seeing the forum on my ipod touch and I'm almost in zombie mode for a good night sleep :P.

did you set permissions for the object to 755?, often its a little missed thing like that.

everything is set at 0755 and when i set to 755 it says "must be 4 slots"

if your using winscp, hold down the control button and make a box over everything.

Shouldnt this lead us into like safari themes now, and maybe we should end up with an app that does it manually. kinda like summerboard with the background, or maybe in a customize update

Romeboards, I already checked the file permissions and they all are 755 :S this is really strange. The only app that doesn't show the ipod touch default colors for a brief moment on startup is Safari, this one works like a charm.

Don't you have this problem on your touch?

no it didn't mess it up that way, its just my tab for new pages is some nasty one so I want to know if you could upload the full folder of safari with the black theme.

This looks awesome. Great tut, i made mine lime green and then blue but i think black looks better so i changed it to black. I have the same question. When I select ipod or audio player, the default.png that shows up is blue on the top and black on the bottom... yet I've replaced it with one that should be both black.

It has worked in other applications with no problem.

I have also tried restarting and everything... I have a feeling it's one of the other "default-XXX" files but I do not want to change them and possibly have to restore and jailbreak.

Anyone have any ideas? It's the only one that I'm missing to complete my "skin."

Ok, I went to the UIKit.framework folder on my ipod, copied the existing Other.artwork file to my computer for a backup, but now when i copy the 'black artwork', I get an error saying "Copying files to remote side failed", and now the file is I'm assuming, corrupted. I go to the back up and try to copy that and it fails also.. but I managed to copy my safari file after that successfully. So now I'm without an Other.artwork file. Has anyone encountered this problem and could help me?

yeah i wouldnt advise trying this, the other.artworks file sized cant be changed. the original tutorial on this was very specific.

go to /Library/Wallpaper (not the /var/root/Library) you need two copies, one would be xxx.png and the other needs to be xxx.thumbnail.png (the xxx is the image's name)

Nope just ask sumone to upload the uikit.framework folder, i ask for someone for that cause i had a messed up keyboard upon jailbreaking.

yup! got it working for 3 apps ....but no luck with Safari.....funny thing was i thought maybe it was cuz i had it in the dock so i went to customize to move it out and lucky me it said firefox..but when i went back to the main page it said Safari....so not sure what to do from here but retry again and again till it decides to change...

The Other.artwork file includes changes to the pngs included in it.

ya gotta look into your mobilemusicplayer.app. youll see the 'defaults' are named differently. rename one of the defaults that corresponds accordingly.

I have a jailbroken 1.1.2 Touch.
I have a problem to copy the other.artwork file back to the UIKit.framework folder. I get error messages, that he can not copy and WinSCP is closing. With Total Commander the same. It said, that he can not copy because of write protection.:confused:
I thought it was because of the modded file but also the original file can not be copied. I can copy any other file, but the other.artwork.:mad:
The bad thing is, that I onlz have make a copz of the original other.artwork file on mz comp and not on the Touch.
I cant open the installer, Settings etc. anzmore.
Now Im afraid to shut down the Touch, and he completely breaks, because he didnt find that file.
Do I have to restore my Touch

I JUST finished editing all the files I wanted to, but I used the original.artwork from the first post who is using FW 1.1.1

So I renamed all my files to Other-ver112
I try to import and I get "imported 0 images"
Is it because I renamed the files or is it completely independent from the original other.artwork that I extracted from

its like i said, 1.1.1 and 1.1.2 artwork files are exactly the same thing, there is no difference between them. 1.1.3 (and assumingly, 1.1.4) artworks files are different from the 1.1.1 and 1.1.2 one, therefore they cannot be changed ATM.

To use a "Theme" you use "SummerBoard".
Skins are what are discussed here. These have to be in a Other.artwork file. And nobody has found a way to extract it on 1.1.3 and above.

no, not now, you will mess up your ipod, i like 1.1.2 anyways cos you can acually use customize and summerboard... the onyl downside is u dot have the wiggle crap, which customize will do, and so much more. PLus u can change all the skins and everytihng. If you want to change your skins, then u will need 1.1.1 or 1.1.2

il do requests for people. just pm me with a link to your file, specify a color (il get as close as i can to it), and il make the files that color, and re upload and pm you it back.

this is now possible on 1.1.3/1.1.4. you can do artwork files:
other.artwork
keyboard-common.artwork
keyboard-latin.artwork

It says that you should not do any of this in 1.1.3 and above.... does this mean even the Safari parts? like.. add tab, favorites,url bar, etc etc? cause i always thought you could just replace those with ones that you edit with color and keep the same name does this make sense? lol xDD please tell me if it does not ill try to make things more clear.:)

thank you so much! :D also... uhmm i see images of how they edited parts of there ipod touch like... if you go into settings or summer board.. or any other app. there's always an on and off tab and it slides back and forth when you tap it, can you change that on 1.1.3?

ps.is there a list anywhere that tells me what i can and cannot change?

im currentyl editing an other.artwork but it seems some of the pixels around my image that are transparent turn out to be white.
ill try to post some screenshots to further explain...

ok so heres an example. i have an image with transparency. its supposed to look like a fingerprint for when you touch certain areas like the buttons on the calculator. instead of it simply showing this, it shows the fingerprint with a white square around the entire image, as if i colored the background of it.
why is this happening?
i cant really post screen shots of it but hopefully someone will understand to help me out.

i tried adding a new layer to the images, and set its opacity to 5%, now the whole thing is a white square in the background.
is there a specific color i need to use or something?

Is it possible to go into the system/library/... and change the Other.artwork than go to all of the apps and change their default.png with the same Other.artwork (just rename it default.png) if I don't have a default.png from the file in the beginning of this thread (blackDefaults)?

When I double click on iPhoneShop-0.6 I get this message...

hi i was attempting to make loading images for the status bar similar to the aero ones in Vista and i believe i replaced all the right files, however once i rebooted the images show half/half as such (see attachments).
im on 1.1.2 and i think maybe if someone can tell me all the files i need to replace that will help alot

if you want to put it in manually, its /Library/Wallpaper. you need one image to put in there, but you also have to add in a duplicated of that exact image and add a ".thumbnail" to the end of it. However, the simple solution is just to create a photo album with that image and sync it to your ipods photos. Happy theming!
