What more could they possibly bundle into an iPod? In 2001 all you got was a 5 GB music player that was 3 times the size of the iPod touch... now you get internet, color touchscreen, videos, games, etc.

A mic would be amazing. Camera I don't care that much; it's just fun. But a mic... VOIP... voice commands... that would justify an upgrade to a new iPod touch for me.

I could see a mic coming as they already support external ones in the 2G, but a camera would probably be straying too far into iPhone territory.

A mic is pretty much guaranteed. I can see why too - it'd be awesome.

although we have to realize that speakers quality due somewhat directly relate to size, and nobody wants to be carrying around a brick in their pocket (not like a bricked ipod...i was referring to something the size of a brick for a good speaker)

and battery life, i'm not sure if many companies get how important huge battery life is to a lot of consumers.

Even though I know it's highly unlikely Apple will do this, I still hope for a camera + mic to be features in any proposed 3G iPod touch... If my ageing Palm Zire has it, why can't a modern + advanced gadget like the touch have both as well? ;)

i completely follow your thoughts.

there isn't much more you can do to the current Touch, especially the 1st gen. even the new 3.0 FW isn't giving us much. but what else can they give us?

the next step forward is new hardware. hence the gen 3 (or 4 or 5 etc). Apple can conceivably add anything to it they wish (camera, radio, bigger screen, mobile internet, better battery, bigger ram/mem/processor etc etc) but how much do they want to compromise the original concept of their sleek sexy looking ipod Touch? any thing new (hardware wise) at the mo would more than probably add bulk. maybe not in the future when technology is even smaller and more advanced.

also, how far away from the Touch do the want to get? should it be called an 'iThing' or 'iWTF'. That'd certainly upset the hard core Apple customer base wouldn't it.

Apple will more than likey release a series of mini notebooks or touch tablets that'll do most of the above. or even a new line of devices that does the all in one, leaving the iPod to be an iPod. who knows? it's all exciting stuff is progress.

As far a immediates go, a new hardware updated gen 3 or a new tablet/mini A5 size notebook (if it happens) would be right up my path. i'd update then. i'll wait until september. personally, i'd happily pay a small monthly premium for the option of mobile internet or dongled mobile internet, but the last thing i'd eve want is a telephone.

But i'll always hold my 1st gen close to my affections.

I think they should at least make a camera to go with it.

Getting a little off topic (but i will comeback promise), the reason why I probably wont pay for the firmware update is because its in june. If a new Ipod is set to come out in sept. it would be a wasted because the next gen iPod will have the next firmware.

Some of the things I want out of the iPod are almost unrealistic for me because it would infringe on the iPhones market, and god forbid any company goes to "war" with itself.

Access to internet anywhere, i dont care if i have to pay a monthly or yearly subscription to get on the net no matter where I am at VIA cellular towers.

Built in mic, but only if it does not hinder the iPod's current size

yeah like samevans said they could sacrifice some of the leftover space and put a bigger screen, but to keep the screen ratio it would have to be wider.

Well the usual price for 8gb 2g iPod Touch is $230 and I bought mine on eBay for $200 and the price might be even lower now...

I know it has been said a lot, but a camera would be the only thing I would like to see. I have mine in an Otterbox, so scratches are not a problem and could really care less about the mic. Of course, with a camera, bumping up to a 64 gig would be nice

Well, you have to consider if Apple put all that nice stuff in a iPod Touch less people would get the iPhone and there goes some of Apple's sales which I dout they want to lose.

I think the best compromise would be a camera as well as better speakers (pref. with bass) for the iPod touch, without jeopardizing sales of the iPhone... That's my wishlist but let's just wait until September to find out what the final product will be like, eh?

Yeah, I don't really see a mic coming. Support for the new style headphones with the remote and mic in line will be there, but one built in, I don't think so. GPS would be awesome though, that way you can get turn by turn directions right on your iPod. I don't see that coming eathier, but it would be nice.

the 2g ipod came out on september 08 and we're on june 09 now we only need 3 more months till september which means that the ipod touch 2g had been on the store for 10 months not 5

Lots of stuff - some that made me consider its competition.

1. Work on sound quality - FLAC support, built in equalizer and other engineering necessities to get the total sound quality up (all but the headset, audiophiles will replace that anyway).

2. Battery Life - Get video up above ten hours and that will make audio exponentially longer as well.

3. Greater video support - divx and xvid would be nice.

4. Mic, for those of us that use the machine as a PDA, notes is good but a mic would be so much easier for quick reminders business stuff.

5. Friendlier interaction with computers/ability to use as a hard drive. Be nice to be able to transfer files from my work computer to home, and just for friendlier file transfer in general.

These five would be at the TOP of my wish list.

I have a friend that works for Apple, specially in the design department. All those Ads you see on TV, yeah he works on them.
He said that the iPod Touch 3G (Third Gen) will have a camera and better BlueTooth support. Like I said, trust me or not up to you. Another thing, no price change is going to be made and YES it will come preloaded with 3.0. So.... People, get your $229 ready (yeah, plus taxes) for the new iPod Touch Third Generation.

it won't get a camera or a mic. iphone is always going to be the upsell with more features like those mentioned. apple wants everyone to get an iphone. the itouch is just a way for apple to avoid turning down $$$ from people that can't / won't do the iphone contract.

despite the fact that you can get a like-new iphone for around $50 more than the cost of an itouch, there are going to be people that would not consider it because they already have a phone ... even though of course you don't have to sign up for any service and you get everything that the itouch has +mic +camera.

I'm pretty sure you already knew this, but it can be any GSM carrier if you're unlocked.

Not everyone can afford the monthly fee of the iphone. Im on Verizon and I love my HTC but I use my ipod touch more and would love a camera on it.

That would be extremely dangerous for Apple. Just link it up to a BT cell, and you would essentially have an iPhone.

if they add a mic it turns into an iphone and with voip they lose a lot of money... so mic equals no a camera is a maybe but i doubt it... if they add a camera then they'll probably change the hardware again and faster ram memory you know... but i doubt that'd be this year maybe next year or the year after? right now i think they're just gonna focus on mainly software for ipod touch and iphones... thats my opinion :D

Would want all the features of the iphone, mainly because like everyone else in the world the reason I got an ipod touch was cause I would not go to at&t simply to get the iPhone and have horrible service. So pretty much camera, better speakers, mics better speed ,and color options would be nice :p

Well, I won't be surprised to see many 1G iPod touch users in Malaysia switching to the new 3gen... The new features will make such an investment worthwhile to these folks... ;)

In order of importance (Please Apple make it happen and defeat all comers who offer resistance against you)

1. 5-7band Custom/Graphic EQ starting the 1st band at 50-70hz (I hate presets) like what Sony, Cowon, Sandisk, and Samsung have.

2. Adjustable Bass boost feature that centers/boost bass around 50-70hz and leaves rest of spectrum normal. 3 levels of adjustment will be fine. Note: If 1. above is met then this isn't necessary.

3. Oled/Amoled screen like the Cowon s9, Sony X, and Zune HD with 24bit color (16million colors)

4. 5megapixel or more camera with HD video camera

5. Backwards compatible (can use my touch 2nd gen apps)

6. 256mb or more ram memory

7. 624mgz or greater processor

8. good price


Note: 'Good price' is last and least important because if all the above is met then Apple can name their price (seriously). And if they decide to offer it for a good price too then I'm getting everyone in my family one. "Happy Unbirthday everyone."

Flash is also software, not hardware. It would come out with 3.1, not just because of iPod3G

It exists, I think. Adobe has a working version, but Apple says it takes too much of the hardware's resources. However, I keep thinking that Adobe will 'leak' it to Cydia.
