You have the BSD subsystem installed on the iPod, right?
Are your computer and iPod both on the same network?

if you reset your ipod your IP adresses might have changed, make sure that is correct. also, make sure you're using the right login and password.
root
alpine
hope this helps.

SFTP and allow SCP fallback.
The first time you connect it takes a solid 30 seconds to authenticate, but if you're not getting that far then something's up.
I haven't needed to change any of my firewall settings to allow the connection.

me neither
In CuteFTP I get the following
Connect: Tuesday 19:11:39 12-25-2007
STATUS:> Connecting to 192.168.1.3
STATUS:> Connecting to 192.168.1.3 (ip = 192.168.1.3)
STATUS:> Socket connected. Waiting for welcome message...
SSH-2.0-OpenSSH_4.6
ERROR:> Timeout
ERROR:> Can't log in. Disconnecting...
STATUS:> Disconnect: Tuesday 19:13:09 12-25-2007
I have installed SSH as part of the 1.1.2 jailbreak, followed that with BSD Subsystem, and then OpenSSH
Would love to know how folks are getting this to work ...
POSTNOTE: I downloaded and tried WinSCP and it works fine, so it must be CuteFTP that is doing something weird.

The weird thing that CUteFTP is probably doing is simply FTP. WinSCP's default connection protocol is SFTP with SCP fallback; use that.

Ahh, that makes sense. I'll give that a go at some point.

It happened to me too. First, make sure you typed in correctly your username and password (root and alpine, by default). Next, is your IP address correct? Sometimes the IP address of the IPod changes, so go to Settings-->Wifi and click the blue arrow of the network you're connected to. Your IP address is on the IP Address line. Hope it helps.

I apologise if this post offends anyone for whatever reason.
I've have looked around at various threads about winscp but, forgive me, I'm a complete bimbo and I'm just not certain or confident enough to actually 'change permissions' or mess around with these important files.
I've managed to dl winscp and get into my ipod touch files but I just don't know where or how to change my permissions. As I have been having a problem with my books app, I need to check if I have /var/root/Media symlinked (or it exists for that matter). I also need to set permissions to 777 to /var/mobile/Media/Ebooks.
If anyone can explain how to do this very simply, I'd be most grateful. Or if you can point me to a guide/thread that explains it in the simplest terms that would be fab. Rep for all helpful posts.
Thanks in advance.

Okay. Just so you know, it's impossible to mess up an important file (or any file, for that matter) by simply right-clicking it and putting in different numbers in the Permissions section.

Cheers for the info but where exactly is this 'permissions section'? Call me a retard but I simply couldn't find it. I'd be really glad if you could tell me how to get to it.

Haha, you're not a retard, i know all this might sound funny.
First off, you need to be using WinSCP or CuteFTP Pro. Then, right-click on the file. There
will be something called Permissions with a box next to it. In WinSCP, change the permissions to 0755, and in CuteFTP make them 755.

Thanks for getting back to me apple123 :) Sorry for the delayed response, I think we're on diff sides of the planet ....I was asleep ;)
I've been right-clicking all over the place :D and the only place I actually managed to see the word 'permissions' is when I clicked Properties of EBooks...at the bottom there's a tick box with " set group, owner and permissions recursively" (don't even know what recursively means:p, eek, better google).
Also there's a Permissions area right above that where there are boxes next to R, W, X and Set UID. Options are owner, group, other and then a little box next to 'octal' with space for four digits.
I apologise for requiring such spoonfeeding but if this is the area you were talking about which bits do I need to change to 0755?
Do I just put 0, 7, 5 and 5 in the owner bit next to R, W, X and Set UID? or all of the boxes? or do I just put it in the octal box??

Well, I just ignore and avoid those boxes altogether. Try using CuteFTP Pro (check out ipodtouchmaster05's video on youtube on how to get it) and while your in that, right-click on the file. There will be a box that has the word Permissions next to it. Type in 755. Hit OK.

YAY!!!! :D Thanks for all your help apple, you are a star!!!
I finnaaaaallllllllly  managed to change my permissions, WOOT! and did as you said, changing them to 0755. I found a thread with pictures about a diff way to SSH which gave me a clue as to which bits to tick. Tried 0777 but that didnt work and your 0755 did!
Cheers for your patience and advice! :p
