When the new firmware is release and bluetooth is unlocked on the 2g, do you think the ipod will be capable of bridging with a bluetooth phone and using its DUN similar to how you can use it with a laptop for internet everywhere although its only 11.1mbps. Only time will tell i suppose

That is a good idea... I didn't think of that. If that worked with my blackberry, I would consider a 2g touch.
You know what I'm excited for?
I remembered awhile back that the project "Pocket Gestures" had gone pretty well. If any of you know about that guy who uses the Wiimote for different things (head tracking, portable whiteboard, etc.), he also used reflective tape on his finger to send the IR back into the camera causing the Wiimote to detect his finger.
For those of you who don't know, the Wiimote sends all controls and the IR camera feed through bluetooth.
Pocket Gestures lets the user control the volume and switch songs just by scrolling up/down and side to side. Using the Wiimote (hopefully detected by bluetooth), I'd love to be able to control my iPods volume and song just by waving my finger in the air from across the room.

Ya that would be cool. I am getting a new EV-DO phone june 5th when my contract expires for verizon. So i am looking forward to this because right now i have a 2g phone and it isn't even worth getting on the internet with that ha.

"DUN through bluetooth to ipod touch" That is THE feature i'm hoping they will include.
I'm currently using a program called Joikuspot for my symbian mobile which turns it into a mobile wireless router that i can use to connect my Touch to over wifi and uses the symbian phones data connection.
This works perfectly however it is quite a drain on the batteries of both devices, i'm hoping bluetooth will be better for this

Do you use the premium or light version?

Hi Andy,
I use the premium version, the light version only works for the http protocol (web browsing) if you want to use it for emails, skype or other none http traffic you need the premium version.

*Bump*
Have any of the Devs out there had a chance to test this out on the firmware that was released yesterday (06/08)? I have a 1st gen touch that I'd gladly replace with a 2nd gen if I could use it as a 'ghetto iphone' with my cell...

the new iphone will be able to just attach to a pc with the usb and share the internet connection - WITHOUT software.... I wonder what doors this will open with the touch

It should be. My phone supports bluetooth internet tethering, so i'm assuming that with the iPod touch's bluetooth, the two devices can connect and utilize the phone's internet connection?

No, I am currently using the 3.0 GM release. It only supports the AD2P profile. I know it sucks. Maybe someone could write an app to extend the number of profiles. I don't know too much on the subject to as how to do such a thing or how profiles work.

I am also waiting for this functionality. I've managed to use my phone as a modem using my mac laptop before, so I can't think there are many barriers to developing an app to do this (the iPod touch os is basically a stripped down version of os x, right?).
Below is a link to some modem scripts that are used to connect mac os x to the Internet through a Bluetooth enabled mobile. Different phones require different protocols, I believe, and you'll be glad to hear that a lot the hard work has been done already. If any devs decide to take on such a project, I hope the info below will be useful...
http://www.taniwha.org.uk/gprs.html. - free modem scripts for GPRS phones
http://homepage.mac.com/jrc/contrib/tzones/ - how to set up your GPRS phone as a modem in mac os x
my two cents...

Hi,
I hope Apple will release a new Firmware 3.1 with full bluetooth support. Until that day, I'll continue to use my Nokia E65 with Joiku soft which create a wifi hot spot.

I am thinking of an app that syncs with a cellphone, via bluetooth. So that we could use the IPT to send 'text'/'sms'. Would that work?
(and, is this the right place for this post??)

On the original subject, Dial Up Networking or any other means of interfacing an iPod Touch via bluetooth networking to another device like a cell phone for internet access represents a multitude of issues. Simutainiously opening access the iTunes, the App store, and other sources from many mobile enviroments for thousands to millions of potential users. While in the current gameplan of competitors like Sony, Apple has as not yet explored them.
Certainly, the iPod touch 2G/3Gs are hardware capable of communicating. The BTstack Mouse, WiiMote, and Keyboard drivers can detect a phone, if nothing else.
It is layers of software, and legalities now.
That said, updates?
