Microsoft "guru" Paul Thurott says the Zune HD launches on September 5. Mind you, this info comes fresh from the Zune forums, so we'll slap a rumor on it for now with the caveat that it matches our earlier post about a September launch window. [Zune Forums - Thanks Joel]

So they've released it a few days before the iPod announcements are expected. Bad move because when the iPod comes out a few days later the Zune will be forgotten about.

I personally think that Microsoft will discontinue the Zune in the next year or so, because when you have the iTunes Store being DRM-free, the stores unwilling to sell them as they're wasting money by ordering stock, and their online music store URGE (and their payout to Justin Timberlake to advertise it ), it just doesn't seem like they're getting anywhere.

I'd rather them focus on getting Surface ready for the consumer market, rather than waste another million on advertising the Zune. It's a clunky device, doesn't appeal, and having seen someone use it in person, not very user friendly. Surface however, will be the greatest thing since Windows 95 for them.
