Addressing the crowd at WWDC 2009 in San Francisco, Apple marketing chief Phil Schiller has announced the iPhone 3GS. New features will include much higher performance, an upgraded 3 megapixel camera with autofocus and video capabilities (capture, on-phone editing), voice control (dialing and playback control), digital compass, hardware encryption, better battery life, and more environmentally friendly components and packaging. if they went matte, i would be much more excited. now when i use my iphone 3gs people wont notice it, they'll think its a normal 3g. if it were matte, it would look sick. i'll have to find a case.

Then Apple realized that people were downloading the apps from torrent sites and decided to charge $20 for the software update.

It was black on the 3G? Anyway this phone is not meant to be a complete new phone for everyone complaining about the design. It is only meant to be an updated version of the 3G. That's why 3G is still in the name. Read the o2 article on it. It calls it the "New iPhone 3G", not the new iPhone.

I would guarantee that this is it. This new iPhone has a lot of new features that were not included in the 3G. This is basically what we asked for.

This new iPhone is a great introduction, especially with the much faster speeds as compared with its predecessor... However, I don't think I will go for it as I'm very happy with my loyal iPod touch but it's likely I will purchase the OS 3.0 though...

Not necessarily. The reason the redsn0w project took so long was because only Chronic was working on the ipod touch 2g jailbreak. The dev team did it in like a night iirc (despite that one flaw).

Since this is an iPhone, i think the dev team will find a jailbreak for it sooner than it took for the ipod touch 2g users.

It has twice the ram and cpu, it's way faster! They weren't going to dramatically change it because it would create problems with the apps.

Well, the faster speeds (RAM and CPU) of the iPhone 3GS are already a great improvement as compared with the previous model... Don't forget about video-recording capability, as well as a better 3MP camera...

Of course I'll still stick to my trusted iPod touch but I won't be surprised if loads of ppl will go for the 3GS once it is officially released in Malaysia! :)

If AT&T and Apple allow iPhone 3G owners (those who bought it with a 2 year contract on the release date for the 3G) to pay the subsidized price 1 year into their contract as a special iPhone upgrade, then I might consider paying $300 for double the storage capacity (kinda hurting me now, I can't put on all of my music, and no videos and little room for apps), and the increased overall performance. I'm also curious though whether they tried to impede jailbreaking... I still have one MAJOR use for jailbreaking (besides making my iPhone look less bland theme wise), which is data tethering with PdaNet. That really comes in handy when I can't get internet on the go when I'm traveling.

Well logically you wouldent sell a "out dated" iphone for a similer price to the new ones... nothing apple do is "Logical"

For me, it was a bit of a disappointment. I expected at least a redesign, maybe a front facing cam, maybe even something new and unexpected. This is like taking a brilliant car, and when it comes to updating it, adding in a new fuel tank when everyone is expecting more.

What do you think they could do? Please enlighten all of us along with Apple. I mean come on, not all companies go about upgrading the look of the device every single year. Apple upgraded the insides of the MacBooks/Pros but not the outside, no complaints there. Same goes for every other PC maker. Not everything is about the looks. I think it's just fine that they upgraded the Speed, Camera, 3G chip, added a compass.

you do have a point when it comes to the pc market, but face the facts, no other phone company has ever done this! having only one general product on the market and only giving it minor upgrades once a year!

What alot of the users failed to realize is that apple actually made it alot cheaper to afford high end stuff and high end phone in this economic times. Would they have profitted if they made iphone 3gs supper good looking better speed more memory more storage high camera and super connection speed. Would people have afford it if their price was high as nokia n97 series phone which is 700 dollars. In this time who would go for a super expensive phone. Apple has contributed to the revolution of the phone industry. Changed alot. They gave us choice rather than choosing windows mobie.
I am tired of windows in everything. Windows that and this. I am not player hating windows but at least we have a OS to choose from. Android , Iphone OS, Web Os etc. For those of you who thought oh well the phone was expesenive when you bought it then guess again we all can now afford it. We bought it and attracted many other person to our apples fan base by showing of3f your new phone and what its is capable of doing. 32 gigs of storage we can store so much more now that we dont have to worry about it. Apple doesnt have to change the look i know soon come there will be the Ultra 4g as soon as the network is up and running. Soon i believe that iphone will be on the Verizon network just give it time. Then we will really enjoy our iphones.

What a rip of only 3MP camera and it looks the same and just like +1 hour of battery life and just the software that's not worth it I'm gonna get the old iPhone it's more better. Why wouldn't they make it like 8MP or something and a slimmer design this time apple is really ripping you off.

Ya man. I don't even use my iPhone camera, its useless to me. I use an actual digital camera which performs way better! Plus there cheap to buy ;)

I only really use any camera for Facebook photos or photos for eBay and stuff, so it's not like it needs to be awesome. A really nice one would just drive up the price. I don't even really care about video.

I have been thinking about the following....

despite all of the new and exciting features (being ironic) the difference in price of this iphone to the old one is a little irrealistic....a 100 dollar difference (from 8gb normal to the 16 of the 3gs) ...they both have contract...in the long run you will be paying almost the same in either version.....and that kinda sucks i mean....you have a 2 year contract where you almost have to sell your soul to the devil (being exagerated) for either version.....

I bought my iPhone 3G here in JAPAN which I got for free for a 2 year contrac, the reason I got it besides it being free was because the cheap DATA plan here in Japan it about $40.
Now, when I signed contract I knew that APPLE would release a new version of the iPhone, and many of the rumors indicated it would be different, and would have a new deisgn and even a front facing camera for iChat, but when WWDC came around and they popped out with the same device just changed internal guts I got HAPPY ! ! ! 3G owners can walk around with their heads up high for another year, until the next iphone comes out, its sad... and I kind of feel bad for the first Gen iPhone owners who paid so much money for such a CRAPPY PHONE ! the 1st Gen iPhone and the 3G saw a huge difference..... but I really dont see much difference between the 3G and the 3GS... so what if its 1 second faster boooooooo hoooooo ! and so what if the greedy apple bastards didnt give us voice control ! I CAN gaurantee you it wont be a month until a wise guy hacker incorportaes the nike + support, Voice Control, to the 3G ! Video we already have one with Cycorder........ What's funny to me is that I cannot beleive people are buying this new version. I like APPLE stuff but am not a FANBOY, I actually would like to see another company such as M$ and its ZUNE to stick it to the iPod.
