Despite the crazy upgrade prices, AT&T are warning that any new iPhone 3GS pre-orders made from Saturday the 13th onwards won't be available on the launch day, June 19th, and will be available and shipped out seven to fourteen days after the order is made.
A positive sign that overall demand at this iPhone launch could be even busier that the 3G. The pre-order system is newly implemented for this launch to try and avoid the heavy demand and resultant queues at retail outlets that occurred on 3G launch day.
Anyone in the US who hasn't already pre-ordered and wants an iPhone 3GS on June 19th will have to get in queue with all the others at an AT&T outlet or head over with their sleeping bag and thermos to an Apple shop, Best Buy or Walmart.

No surprise here, I bet there's already 3 or 4 million pre-ordered, plus the ones that have to wait a week.

What got things all confused from the way things are normally done is Apple rocked their own cart with the first generation of iPhone, which was not subsidized by the phone companies (where that applies, probably everywhere the first generation was sold: definitely the case for AT&T in the US) and the end-users paid the full price for them when they got them, or (I'm not sure about this) there was at least a much lower percentage of subsidy from the phone companies than is typical. However, along comes a new generation, and a lot of people with 2 year contracts (at least, in the US: individual phone companies and their contracts may vary) that aren't past the standard upgrade point, so people need to pay something more than the new customer/point of time the old phone was paid off price, and... the iPhone 3 GS is sufficiently expensive hardware without the subsidy hiding the price, that people cough up hairballs when they see that price, when in reality, it is no more than the way that phones have been subsidized or charged for with other phones in contracts, and no comparable phone for hardware costs will cost you any less to buy without the benefit of getting it subsidized by being a new customer, or an eligible existing customer past that no-penalty upgrade point.
So, call it like it is for the upgrade price and people's reactions: people being stupid and forgetting how things work in every other part of the mobile world, and somehow thinking Apple is doing something different or outrageous. I guess iPhone mania makes a lot of people stupid!

You cannot believe how wrong you are by saying that.
I'm Canadian, so no pre-orders for us though, looks like I'll have to get date-of-release. iPhone 3G S' popularity seems to be increasing by the second.

how much does it cost to upgrade from a iphone 3g to the iphone 3gs?
As of now, I believe about $400, according to Blake.
why do people want it like stright away, people should learn that it'll be like this every year, this is not even a mojor update to the 3g,faster,woohoo!video recording omg you must be kidding me?its a great device but camping outside, man it goes to show apple really know how to advertise there products, with or without steve jobs,
I'm just hoping that Voice Control bit also somehow makes it to the iphone 3g.
Looks like it's just software related, right?

I ordered mine at Apple.com about a few hours after the 3G S was announced. I went back to the page, and it doesn't say anything about them being sold out.

Im glad i preordered it sooner than later. The iPhone 3GS is a minor upgrade but i dont have a phone right now so it makes a bit more sense for me. Which one did you get? I got the Black 32GB iPhone 3GS. Some people say that 32GBs is too much but you can never have to much storage for an iPod. And for those of you that preordered at an AT&T store which number are you? I think it says so on your reciept.

It doesn't matter is you paid for it or reserved it. The bottom line is that unless you are having it mailed to you it's FIRST COME, FiRST SERVED on Friday

In my opinion the 3GS isn't anything special. Apple could have done a lot more to it to bring it in line with other phones available at the moment.
And if people want video recording, why not just jailbreak the 3G and use Cycorder!!
I'd be happy with a 3G at the moment, and until Apple pull something spectacular out of the bag I won't be camping outside my local store! :p

I told an acquaintance to hold off. He did. He waited for the announcement.
He said he likes $99.
He asked me if the 3GS processor speed is worth more money. I demonstrated my Touch2G open applications, startup Safari and load different pages. He is happy he waited and he is getting the $99 iPhone.
He pre-ordered his iPhone.
Is he going to be able to pick it up June 19th?

jpga13,
...so will he get his iPhone June 19th?
Is it "first come first served" ?

I bought mine already and it clearly stated it will be First Come, First Served at the Apple Store. If you have it shipped you may or may not get it with the new shipping guidelines they issued.

This is the $99 offer, not 3GS.
Do you think he will have to stand in line?
He is older than me, and I am 62 this past June 13.
Why would he have to stand in line for the old iPhone 3G???

06-14-2009, 05:28 PM
I don't know.
I do know he cannot have it at that price until June 19th.
I guess, he will stand in line or pick it up after the "big event".
I know he is just as excited as the 3GS people.
He has wanted the iPhone since he saw my Touch 2G. I told him it isn't the iPhone.
Then, he saw me make an internet phone call.
I had to explain it is WiFI.
I made him watch the Apple iPhone review.
He definitely wants the iPhone. He insists he will be happy with the one for $99. He is satisfied with processor speed and he sees how many applications I have on there, including a tv episode and the Star Trek movie, and I have less than 4GB used.
I hope he doesn't mind waiting a little more.

Hey, thank you. I will tell him.
If Apple upgrades the processor on the Touch 2G, I would buy a new Touch.
I use my Touch 2G several times practically every day. I would appreciate having more processor speed. Touch 2GS anyone?
