Yes, it's a relatively new cricket format. About a couple of years old... So now cricket has 3 formats - Test cricket (a game can go on for 5 days), one-day cricket (about 8-10 hours) and 20-20!!!
There's a possibility of 20-20 being introduced in regions of the world where cricket has not been able to gain a foothold due to its traditionally "long hours" format(s)
