I am going to purchase an iPod Touch and I wanted to know if I should get a 2nd Gen or wait for the 3rd Gen

2G, otherwise you are gonna be waiting for 2 months. Just sell the 2G when/if a 3rd gen comes out. Thats what I will be doing for each and every iPod Touch XD.

If you want to wait a few months and wait for an updated one with new features, then wait. if you cannot wait, or need to be jailbroken just get the 2nd gen. If it were me, i'd wait

I did have a 2nd Gen jailbroken... But I sold it for some quick cash..

I personally would hold out as long as possible, and snab all the free/low priced apps while I waited.

You're a bit late to buy an iPod :o
I recommend waiting the extra 2 months, and you can order it the day it's announced, and almost no one else will have it till christmas :p

You should really wait for the new one since you sold ur second gen, theres no point in buying another one :)

But either way, I don't mind, I got a good deal. I got my case for free and a 2 year warranty with Best Buy for $40.

Do we have any idea how much different the 3G will be hardware wise? Because that's the only difference, the software/OS will update just the same.

The Dev-Team are hoping that the 3g will be easy to jailbreak if they don't release details about the 3GS jailbreak till it comes out. However if it's not, keep in mind how long it took to get a 2G jailbreak. Finding a viable bug that will allow code injection is not an easy task. Some times it happens by accident, other times it can take weeks, month, or years to find.

The rumors will certainly be hotting up about the iPod touch 3rd-gen, now that it's already July and there are only two months to September... Now it's just a wait-and-see on what Apple's next move will be.... :)

I don't believe they will release new iPod Touch coming this September. New additions like Apple camera for 2G touch, yes, new one, no. You still have unsold units everywhere, sure they could lower the price of 2G and come up with 3G but really, people want new things and buying old one if new one already hit the market will make little sense. At this point, Touch 2G is a multimedia player number 1, why try to beat it if there is nothing on the market that comes close to it. Built this one out, add camera, get BT to do more than just stereo headphones, and sell 2Gs like fresh, hot rolls. Throw out a new one and scrap all unsold inventory? Makes very little sense. Also if you add camera to iPod Touch and maybe GPS the price tag goes up significantly. The only reason I see they would release a new one is if they have hardware issues with the 2G they can't fix and new one would be cheaper for them to release. Otherwise, just add goodies to the existing 2G and wait a year to sell more. There is still a great market out there for people who are waiting for a new one, but once they find out that either new one is not coming out or it is only faster with more storage, they will go out an buy 2G anywho...

It's completely your opinion but did you notice how long it took for the jailbreak to come out for the 2g ipod touch? i would just wait...worse comes to worse you can simply sell your 2g and buy the 3g

As pcougar said, Apple's trying to get rid of stock again by sending every MacBook purchase an iPod touch. Getting rid of either A, overstock, but apple knows how much they need by now, and/or B, getting rid of current stock to make room for NEW stock that will be unveiled in September but most likely leaked before then.

So basically you let best buy rip you off with a product replacement plan?

You realize it is a one time exchange? You realize it overrides the manufacturer 1 year warranty? You realize you spent 40 bucks on nothing and they convinced you it was a good deal? =/ Why do people keep buying the PRPs. It is ridiculous! Heck half the time they send your stuff to APPLE then get it back to you. Do some research people!

That depends on how patient you are. If I were you I'd definitely try to hold out for the 3rd gen release.

Well, the 3rd gen should have a camera, according to the front page. It will also have hardware specs similar to the 3GS iphone, which means it will be much faster than the 2g.
