The odds are against us. And for those who say that there isn't a point; it would be more than possible for Apple to pre-install maps, and then charge for extra ones.

Apple can't pre-install maps... Google doesn't allow that sort of thing :(

yea I was really frustrated when it became apparent that GPS wasn't going to be supported by iPod Touch 3G so I went and bought a 3rd party device. And boy was I surprised. The iGPS360 which works great with the software program xGPS is a great system that works far better than what I had expected. I did some storm chasing with it and was really amazed by the accuracy and reliability of the product. So don't be let down that GPS isn't coming out because there are options out there.
P.S. xGPS is a jailbreak app but they are in the developing stages of building an Apple Store App for this fall.

For GPS to work, you need maps, essentially the entire Google Maps on your device. I doubt we'll be seeing Apple turning their iPod touch 3G into a TomTom Navigator anytime soon. It's already gonna have a camera anyway ;)

Why does everyone want a GPS on an IPOD It's a ipod for crying out loud. Sure it can play games and watch videos, but it was made for music. Anyways if you want a GPS go but one.

I'd settle for a compass

i dont see why you would want a compass.....its a high tech device and you want an invention from the 1600s in it?

What good would GPS do if you have to be near internet to use it?

I want a thermometer. I've always been in a predicament where I wanted to know what the current temperature where I was standing was.

a thermometer is much more reasonable than a compass, even though it would be 95% pointless cuz of the weather app. it would only be useful where theres no internet.

First of all, you don't need Internet for GPS. That's why it uses satellites. -.- Second of all, when the 2G was in the works, we had no idea it was sporting BlueTooth and FM chips until we cracked it open and took a look at its guts. Don't shoot it down until Engadget or someone else gets one and does an autopsy on it, ok? There's no point in being negative anyway.

The satellites get your position. To display your location in a way that's decipherable to your average user, you need maps. And how do you get those maps to your device? The interwebs.

The ipod touch 2g has a form of GPS more or less. Of course, you have to be connected to wifi because the ipod positions itself based on the location of the server using Maps. But as for turn by turn directions, youre out of luck.

A GPS chip could be used to sense what distance you've gone and in what direction, thereby shuffling to the next page on the pre-existing 1 map store feature. It would at least emulate turn-by-turn, but you wouldn't be able to change destinations without a hotspot or more stored maps somehow...

Download the free Weather Channel app, it's awsome :)

why the hell don't you want GPS? I would much rather use my touch than my blackberry for gps in the car. My blackberry's screen is much smaller and is harder to see from a distance. I love it otherwise though.

I didn't buy my Touch for music. It is a PDA, that plays music and videos.
I have a Garmin Gecko GPS. I have a Garmin software for my EeePC netbook (big screen).
I purchased the GPS for Touch, because it does more than just a GPS, is more lightweight, is more convenient and it does it all more easily, when I finally get it to run on all my GPS apps.
The GPS does not require internet.
The iGPS360, in particular, has a strong receiver.
The maps are not a problem, because maps can be downloaded into the cache.
For example, I have downloaded 200 km around my area of interest in Panoramascope.
In Topo, I have downloaded 7.5 minute series topographic maps for three areas of interest, in separate states in the United States.
Several of the GPS apps interacts with Google Maps.
GPS apps have practical information, like Rest Stops, or camping, or RV sites.
