If you are jailbroken, updating to 3.1.1 might cause the "Connect to itunes screen" also called recovery mode. I have updated 3 friends ipods, all who understood that they would lose jailbreak. All 3 got Recovery mode error 14. Luckily I backed them up.

So Backup, and be careful

I updated to iTunes 9 because MuscleNerd said that it's fine on twitter. It's pretty much the same with an ugly, glossy interface.

Upgrading messes things up. It upgrades the firmware, but the jailbroken files still remain. Its like replacing the insides of an orange with the insides of an apple. It just won't work .

Someone had stated that upgrading to 3.1.1 over top a jailbroken iPod left the jailbroken files on the phone, and just replaced the OS. This is completely wrong. If you have a jailbroken iphone or ipod touch, and you upgrade to 3.1.1, all jailbroken apps are gone, and you can not jailbrake it again, at least not until someone comes out with a program that does that. Also you can NOT restore back to 3.0. Apple made sure of that. I just got off the phone with tech support. So just be patient and wait for the Dev Team. If you are super geeky enough and have and app that will let you jailbreak a 32gig 2nd Gen, ipod Touch, upgraded to 3.1.1 running on Windows XP and using iTunes 9, by all means contact me immediately. boy@woh.rr.com I will worship the ground you walk on and perform bathing rituals for you with my tongue.

Have you downgraded any iPod touch 2Gs? I want to be sure I can downgrade before attempting any restoring of my iPod.

Yes the ipod touch 2g can be downgraded, i know this because ive done it. however you need to dfu and shift restore on itunes 8.2, 9 will not allow it. also when i upgraded to itunes 9 to try it and to use the features combined with 3.1.1, when i uninstalled it and tried to install itunes 8.2 agin to restore it would NOT install, kep giving me errors, but it allowed me to install itunes 9 again (sneeky apple) luckily i dual boot and had 8.2 installed on the other os. i restored and re jailbroke. :)

This is true the files are in your ipod and you have to ssh to remove them. Yes it may LOOK like there gone but there just only removed via ssh.

Why is everybody always so concerned about this? Whenever I update from jb'd to regular in iTunes I always do a shift-click restore, so it's a fresh and clean install. And then just live without a jb'd iPod for a couple weeks until the dev team gets their thumb out of you know where and release an update.

Yeah, this is from MuscleNerd's twitter:

3G+3GS unlockers..you must not update to official 3.1! unlock needs pre-hacked 3.1 with 04.26.08 http://twitpic.com/h3xjo

I was noticing... when I clicked on check for updates in iTunes and the normal screen came up, it had iTunes 9 listed and another updates for your device. I de-selected it because I wanted to read more on here about it before installing incase of JB problems. Do thee aficionados think it has something to do with it???

I just upgraded from a jailbroken 3.0. It all went fine, except that I now have 1.67gb of 'Other' that wasn't there before. Any fixes? (other than restoring).

There's some folder or something that you have to delete in ssh. There's a thread on here somewhere...

Cant you just DFU Restore to initial 3.0 before updating to the 3.1

..That should fix it, right?

i really want that app mangment :(

thanks in advanced

(if anyone found a solution or as the same problem let me know by message on profile or something ;) )thanks!

I updated from 3.0 jailbroken to 3.1.1 and I don't have any problems. I deleted a bunch of mods I had on my iPod like categories and stuff, cause in the past it gave me a lot of problems. I just wanted to be extra careful before I updated. Plus I didn't want to restore.
