How come after I updated to the 3.1 iPod software my Top 25 Most Played playlist was messed up? I mean, it still shows up how it's supposed to on my laptop, but it's totally different on my iPod. How do I fix this?

Well at least I'm not the only one. And it's not only my Top Played playlist that was screwed up, it's my Recently Added as well.

Here are those playlists in my iPod that were screwed-up badly:
- 1980s and earlier
- 1990s
- 2000s
- Bottom 125
- Mamma Mia!
- Recently Added
- Recently Played
- Soundtracks
- Tap Tap Revenge
- And several others! :(
In short, pretty much ALL of my Smart Playlists were messed up... Songs are still the correct ones but the sequence has gone totally bonkers... Nvm, it's 0947 hrs here in Petaling Jaya, I'll give Apple Malaysia's Tech-Support a call to find out how to solve this issue...

For my Top 25 Played, the songs aren't even the right ones, but totally different songs.
If you find out anything, please let us know. Thanks.

Called Apple's tech-support just now... They advised me to restore the iPod to original settings... I did just that but somehow, the firmware was still at 3.1.1 and the same problem still persists...
Anyway, I also sent an email to their support dept via apple.com and hopefully, these guys can provide a more viable solution... :(

Yeah, I tried restoring mine and got the same result after adding everything back.

Hmmm, some forumers on another thread mentioned that the only way is to do a DFU restore... However, this is not possible with iTunes 9 unfortunately...
The other option is to wait for another upgrade that is able to rectify this buggy issue...

What is a DFU restore?
I hope they come out with another update soon.

DFU = Device Firmware Upgrade. It is done by holding both Power and Home button for 6 secs and then keep holding the home button for 10 secs. It should show up in iTunes, asking you if you want to restore. That's a DFU restore.

I advise ya'll to go to a nearby Apple store and just give it to them, it would definitely be easier than asking them over the phone.
If you have a laptop then bring it along with you because they could need to use your iTunes.

Same here. Fuck I make my device unjailbroken and go with newest firmware to obtain new features and possibly better battery life etc. Instead I get pocket system that is unstable, glitches in various parts, and even closes programs for some memory issue through firmware - I'd get this on jailbreak with some additional daemons like winterboard - NOT with apple stock firmware (goddamnit)
And i would downgrade in instant - just that all my app stored data would go away since I cannot restore backed up data in iTunes to older version!

I tried that with a new playlist called "Songs on YouTube videos"... The playlist was a-ok in iTunes but completely missing from the iPod... :(
Nothing much we can't do now, unless we DFU restore the unit back to OS 3.0 or wait for a new update that will solve this problem once and for all!

Sadly the 3.1.2 update doesn't fix anything having the do with the smart playlists.
I just updated and checked my iPod and everything's still messed up.

Same... Looks like I'll have to send Apple an email highlighting about this problem... I'm not planning to downgrade the firmware or anything but it just seems so weird to see the songs all over the place, when the order is fine on iTunes... :(

This worked on mine a while back to fix the playlist issue. On iTunes on your pc edit the playlist and add a new rule, playlist is music. The playlists then seemed to sync correctly.

Well, that helps on the "Top XX Most Played"... But I'm still figuring out how to solve the problem for more specific playlists like "Electronic" (genre) or "Recently Added"... :(
Hoping for Apple to release an update that fixes this buggy issue soon!

Did 3.1.3 fix this? And is this a JB issue?

No to both. I'm running 3.1.3 unjailbroken, sitll no top 25.
However, to the dude with the smiley face saying whatever fixed his top 25 but nothing else, 3.1.3 did say it would fix playlist issues. Since it didn't fix top 25, I would assume it might've fixed all others.
Meanwhile, I'm going to try whatever everyone else did to fix their top 25 and see if it fixes mine.

if you click Manually Manage music video and music in iTunes, you won't have the 25 Most Played list or any other for that matter.
what i did to solve this (i'm on 3.1.2) was to untick that and let iTunes sync all my music, so it put the Top 25 Most Played, Top Rated, etc playlists on my iPod touch and then i ticked the Manually Manage my own video and music again and now the playlists work.

I've never had Manually Manage checked. What fixed it for me was adding the rule "playlist is music" to the playlist, like someone suggested earlier. It's much simpler and quicker than syncing twice.

3.1.3 probably didn't really fix ANYTHING, it just patched the exploit used by blackra1n and PwnageTool.
