Ok, well, for this rant, im going to compare an average shooter (Halo 3) and a Great Amazing Shooter (Half Life 2)

Halo 3 so far is 360 Only.
HL2 is for Xbox, Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.

Score 1 for Half Life 2.

Halo 3, being only 360 for the time being, can't be modded that easily.
Half Life 2 comes with the Source SDK, which comes with the ability for users to create their own mods, (easily, i would say), Hammer Editor (Custom Maps, dont have to wait a long ass time for new maps), and many many more feats.

Score 2 for Half Life 2.

Halo 3 tries to incorporate Sandbox gameplay by having "Forge", being able to tool around with game variants and make their own Game Varaint and object placement, but only just by replacing various items on the map.
Half Life 2 has Garry's Mod, where you can Pose Ragdolls, build such contraptions as a Catapult, Windmill, and even a Teleporter with WireMod.

Score 3.

Halo 3 tries to be all shiny with Bloom Effects (Which is really over-abundant, by the way.)
Half Life 2 has had this for 3 years now. What the Hell? Halo 3 thinks bloom is now.

Score 4.

Halo 3 re-hashes Deathmatch, CTF, and others. A lot.
Half Life 2 has Half Life 2: Deathmatch, (Deathmatch. :P) Counter Strike Source (Round Based Tactical Squad Shooter), Day Of Defeat Source (WW2 Tactical Shooter), and many more mods, even Sourceforts.

wow, why do people "hate" halo 3. It is truly an amazing game with incredible graphics...If you knew master chief doesn't die...much you know...all that is happening is that he is flying towards another planet, which I believe was part of the marathon series?...Much you know, Comparing HL2 to a game where you don't know what happens.

we get it, your a HL fanboy.

people love halo because its designed to give the feel that your the main character, u become much more involved in the game that way, it gives you a sense that everthing in the game is happening to you. this is why the master cheif character is never fully revealed, your supposed to substitute yourself into that character (subconciously (sp?) of course), which results in a much more organic feeling game. The amazing graphics for the scenery only adds to the overall feel of the game.

you did extensive coverage of half life, but close to nothing on halo, if you want ppl to respect your opinion (seeing as it is clearly just that, opinion) dont be so one sided, hopefully my post was a good counter point to ur hl comments

I don't really care for either game, they both have their plus and minus points. But they are both generic shooters. Nothing truly innovative. I personally feel that Shadowrun was a great step forward for shooters.

How come you say that Halo 3 has a good "forge" mode when Half-Life 2 has Garry's Mod. You can get Garry's mod for free and edit much better than anything Halo can do. Half-Life 2 can do mods and map sharing and just about everything else under the customize category.

I have played Halo 3 more than Half-Life 2 and have to say that Half-Life 2 is a much better game. Xbox Live gets really boring after awhile and besides you have to pay $70 a year to play online. Half-Life 2 has tons of replay value with Counter-Strike and Garry's Mod. You can record all of your games with a program like FRAPS and share it online or save it to your HD.

I don't know about you, but the single player mode in Halo 3 is pretty bad. The ending was horrible and you know Microsoft left it open so that they could come back with another game to make more money off the same story. Half-Life 2 was pretty damn satisfying, and when you play it with hacks over again it is super fun. How can you say a game without hacks is satisfying and has good replay value?

If you really want to go I can say that PC games are much better than the Xbox 360 and the PC will always be a superior gaming platform.

While hacks do add a significant amount or replayability, it's not really necessary. You have to appreciate the game itself as well.

I do agree with you on many of your other points, though. Counter Strike: Source would make a great stand-alone game, and is indeed sold that way. The same thing goes for Half Life 2: Dearhmatch.

Also, Forge kinda sucks. It sounded like a cool idea at first, but the fact that you can't actually create your own maps (you have to build off of existing maps) kind of ruins its potential in my opinion. When you add that to the limits to the numbers of objects you can lay down, it's pretty much just...well...bad.

HL to me is cool because of the physics. The Source and Havoc engines that power the game are amazing. It is realistic and allows you to think normally when you play it. If you think you could jump a certain distance in the game based on real life situations, it's probably possible.

However I play halo when I want sharp turning, 'nade sticking, gun slinging action. Half-life is great for FPS if you like your gameplay based off of reality. But wouldn't it be fun once in awhile to jump 40 feet forward to rush and clash energy swords with some dude from the other side from the world whilst yelling 'PWNAGE' into a microphone that leads to a headset you know he's listening too?

In my opinion neither game is better, but they are the top games of their genre as far as how good they are.

I own halo 1-3 and HL2. I have to say that the average gamer is not a technorat and doesnt know how to use that SDK they have, while the forge makes simple-modding much more social. Anyone can do it.

Also, Halo 3 is simply a better overall game than HL2. Better story, and you feel more accomplished after seeing the chief through 5 years of kickass storyline.

I agree switto, you really got to play the other halo's before you judge halo 3. You need to know whats going on, sure there are flood and grunts and even brutes, but most people aren't even aware of why they are there or how they got there. You need to complete the trilogy...I know a lot of people who just play halo 3 for live. Now that is just dumb, I finished campaign as quick as possible so I could know what happens to MC. I was just dieing to know! I feel that this might not just be a trilogy if you know what I mean by the legendary ending :)>.

This kinda goes far back, but in response to the whole "killed off the main character" and "alternate ending", there wasn't an alternate ending. It was part of a whole. You see, way back when there was this game called Marathon... the game takes place in 2552. Marathon
begins with you in the year 2794.The game starts with with you waking up being cold inside a tube for around 200 years. Also, without getting crazy in depth there are numerous references to Marathon in Halo, with weapons names, symbols, etc. It's possible, and very likely, that the Halo series is in fact a prequel to Marathon.

And by the way Halo overrated, but it is by no means bad. On par with Half Life.

halo 3 is fun for about the first 25 minutes until you realize its the same in halo and halo 2. cutscene, battle , capture something , rinse, repeat. the hl2 story line from HL to Hl2: episode 2 is far superior to that of halo 3.
