Until someone builds and releases a Windows tool (may not be for a while) you'll need to find someone with a Mac and create your own custom .ipsw. Then copy this over to your PC, downgrade to 3.0, jailbreak 3.0 then DFU shift-restore your custom 3.1 or 3.1.1 firmware. That's the current method to my knwoledge, however the Dev Team should have a full blog post up shortly with more details.

I just looked, so you can't just simply upgrade, instead you have to restore.

What is the easiest/best way to backup and then restore my cydia stuff? I remember using aptbackup before but it never restored my repos then install stuff.

Works for 3.1.1. as long as that was preloaded on your device. A Windows version will probably only be released when a 3rd party coder writes one based on the Pwnagetool or if the Dev Team are able to repackage the exploit into redsn0w, which is usually released on all OSes.

Windows has always come out significantly later than mac. Simply because Pwnage Tool has always been a mac only tool. And the generation of these ipsw's is much simpler on the ipod native operating system, Mac.

You THOUGHT, they never stated they were releasing a Windows version. They had more focus on getting support for all devices before porting it. Then they wouldn't need multiple versions of RedSn0w

Windows versions of PwnageTools are generally built by 3rd party programmers not directly associated with the core Dev team. You just need to hope that there's one who takes up the task.

I'd say it's more likely that a Windows package will appear when we get more clarity on the the relative merits of greenpois0n or any breakthrough with a redsn0w update. Until then find a friend with a Mac who let you make a custom .ipsw.

They should work on windows as well when the proper tools come out. But of course, you cannot be 100% until release.

On another note, i have a 2gb and am getting a 1600 error using advanced mode. Speculation? Solutions?

can someone help me? so i downloaded the new pwnagetool, selected my 3.1.1 file, and let it finish. then, i put my ipod touch 2g into DFU mode and restore to the custom 3.1.1 that pwnagetool created, but itunes gives me error 1600. any idea ? and yes, it IS in DFU.

no you shouldn't need to be connected to the internet for itunes to recognise it.

Well on a 3gs the restore process has an extra step: verifying with apple. And for that it has to be online. But that check should spit out a custom firmware because it doesn't hash the same as a official firmware would. So does iTunes skip the check all together or what?

i'm not entirely sure about this but i would think apple would recognise it as the normal firmware because thats what you have downloaded and used to jailbreak it with.

Well I want to be extra sure before I try to restore. Because I can't be connected to the Internet half way through the restore because my Internet is tethering my iPhone. And I'm pretty sure apple can tell the firmware is different. So I'm wondering what kind of trickery is behind the restore.

Worked so well. Fully jailbroken via PwnageToolApp (first time I've seen the boot pineapple), all my apps are working. Had to search around for some available Cydia repo's, that took a while.

As far as I know, you make some settings changes in iTunes allowing you to connect to Saurik's server which "checks" the hash and spits out what iTunes wants to see. He goes more indepth in this post of his (http://www.saurik.com/id/12). So, in short, you need internet.

Stupid me went ahead and did the 3.1 update through iTunes -- if I do this whole Pwnage process, will I be able to A) Jailbreak my phone, and B) Unlock it? Or for B will I have to downgrade to the old baseband?

It is possible to run it on a PC but now in Windows. How ever it would breaks Apples licence agreement so if you want it don't google iDeneb.

I think you have to shift+restore and then sync your data again, not 100% sure of that though I just remember something about doing shift+update causing you to lose some memory.

Just as the JB for 3.0, Im gonna sit back and have another beer, some of you guys are too high strung. I use windows, I understand that the ipods and iphones run on a mac based os..so obviously they should be jb on such. If you didn't want to wait for the jb, you shouldn't have updated...have patience, you'll need it later in life.

Yeah i'm sure anyone can got to a library or something that has macs, if you really can't wait for windows

LOL, I love this thread. I just jailbroke my iPod Touch 2g on Windows, but I kept getting the 16xx error, finally I figured how to maybe fix it.

FOR ALL YOU PEOPLE GETTING THE 16XX ERROR....

Instead of holding the home and power and blah blah to get it into DFU Mode, try this.

1. First make sure your iPod is disconnected from your computer.
2. Make sure your iPod is turned completely off (not just locked)
3. When you plug the USB Cable into your computer (be sure not to connect it through a dock, it has to be direct), also hold the home button at the same time.
4. Wait for the "Connect to iTunes" screen to come up to let go of your home button.
5. Your computer should say your iPod is now in recovery mode.
6. Shift+Restore to your custom firmware.
7. Wait for it to finish the jailbreak, and your done!

Sorry if someone already said this, but I just wanted to help some people out. :)

P.S. I was already 3.0 jailbroken before I tried this. Don't really know if that would help though

I don't get how to JB...

I'm on Windows, I have an iPod actually in DFU mode, so no firmware, but I can't install him the 3.0 or whatever, I've even tried 2.2.1... I'm only able to get it in 3.1.1
I got and iTouch 2 gen, I've tried to JB with iTunes 9.0.1, 8.2.1.x, 8.2.0.24, and I'm actually with 8.2.0.24, I always get error 1601. And I don't understand the procedure to JB..

What should I do?

If anyone manages to grab the new Pwnagetool of the torrent can they upload to a mirror and provide a link here please. It looks as though the Dev Team have crashed the interwebs as there's no torrent coming down fro anyone as far as I can see... or maybe they ran into a last minute hitch and pulled it...

alright so this means that 2nd Gen ipod touch can get 3.1 jailbroken only with 3.0 already jailbroken and 3.1 custom firmware restore, right? im a bit confused

It is stated that being jailbroken at 3.0 (or 3.0.1) is a nescessary condition for the 3.1.1 update. You can find many a tutorial on youtube on how to update, or indeed how to downgrade to 3.0 before updating. Many people have confirmed that this does not work on the 3g touch, or any touch purchased with 3.1 firmware.


I wonder... could anyone here tell me if there are any problems after updating to 3.1.1 with restoring from backup? I.e. keeping all old data. I would really rather not loose game saves (including those from [redacted]), bookmarks, settings etc. I know these things are not saved simply by re-syncing, but by restoring from a back up. Has anyone done this successfully?

This is driving me up the wall. I upgraded my first generation iPod Touch to 3.1.1 and am trying to jailbreak with PwnageTool and every time a get one of these two things:
1: The "Error 1600" box
or
2: an unjailbroken iPod Touch.

No, you can just downgrade back to 3.0, then jailbreak 3.0, then shift+restore to custom 3.1/3.1.1 firmware. It doesn't matter cause you lose your jailbroken themes and stuff when you shift+restore to custom firmware.

You could run leopard in VMWare, make the ipsw, then put it on your windows hard drive

Yes you can.
I ran OS X in vmware. Made my restore image, then copied it over to Windows did a restore through iTunes. Worked like a charm.

JB my iPod touch 2G on Windows, just get a copy of the custom FW and restore using itunes.

I read from one of the Dev Team members that they would like to port PwnageTool over to windows they just need a windows coder.:D

Thank goodness for OSX86. Fired it up...updated iTunes, did the whole pwnage tool thing. Worked like a charm. eat it dev team. thanks for 3GS jailbreak though dev team :).

i didnt have any problems when i upgraded and 3.1.1 was a bit faster than 3.0

if the instructions say you have to "restore" to the custom firmware, then yes EVERYTHING is deleted
