You will need a copy of a PwnageTool 3.1.3 created 3.1.1 firmware for iPod Touch 2G's. Don't ask me where to get it, google is your friend here.
Download Quickfreedom ---- click here (http://outgoing.ipodtouchfans.com/?d=aHR0cDovL2lwb2QyZy5pbmZvL0Rvd25sb2FkL2NsaWNrLnB ocD9pZD0x)
Install it
Click "jailbreak ipod"
It will require that you install LibUSB. (beware this can mess you up if you dont install it right.)
Click the "Install LIBUSB" button
Follow the instruction on how to install it in compatibility mode if you are running Vista or Windows 7
Install it
Browse for a 2.2.1 firmware in Quickfreedom or download it. (you won't actually restore this, its just so that quickfreedom can verify it.)
Click next
Ignore this step. click next again
You will now need to put it in DFU mode. i suggest using the "DFU instructions" button. this step may take a few tries cuz it did for me. once its in DFU mode it will start the pre-jailbreak and will turn your ipod screen WHITE. this is good! once it is done doing its thing you can open iTunes and SHIFT+CLICK+RESTORE and browse for your copy of the 3.1.1 custom firmware. it will then restore you to a jailbroken 3.1.1!!!!!!
CONGRATS!!!!! Hopefully you did it with no problems!!

No Josh, your iPod must be on the 3.0 Jailbroken Firmware or it won't work.

I think they made the System Partition bigger. Before it was 500 MB large, now it is 578 MB, and the Other size just after Restoring was 283 MB, almost a Gigabyte.

It took me about three times to get the white screen. The 3rd time I tried, I had somebody plug in the USB cable while I was holding the two buttons. The previous attempts failed for me because I plugged it in, then hit the two buttons. The couple seconds difference may have made a difference for me. Is this tethered or untethered? Plus when I was d/l'ing the 2.2.1 FW, my Firefox crashed (I had QuickFreedom open at the time and I had just installed the lib thing...on Xp 64 bit). I restarted FF and it totally froze. I couldn't close it even through the task manager (access denied although I hav admin priveliges on XP). I closed QuickFreedom through the task manager one time and then tried to log off of the computer. It was taking forever to I selected restart, then shut-down, then sleep (all this hapeened within a 10 min period). The comp eventually went to sleep, then I woke it and it shut down.
I then booted it back up, and here is where the real trouble starts. My mouse and keyboard are totally unresponsive. I tried it in my other comp (Vista) and it works fine, but it doesn't work on the XP. Now that means that I can't log on at all or uninstall quickfreedom to see if it fixes the issue. I'm in a big problem (I can't even boot into safe mode because of an unresponsive keyboard - NO INPUT WHATSOEVER). I need help.
Oh ye and another thing I forgot to mention; when I was installing either quickfreedom or the lib thingy, a notice came up saying that a file cannot be overwritten or is read only or something like that. I clicked retry and the install continued fine.

I can't pretend to be a professional when it comes to jailbreaking. I just follow the instructions and try my best. First, the unit after I jailbroke it, is untethered. It starts up with my problems, and without a PC.
I installed Quickfreedom, I then installed LibUSB through the software...make sure you run it as Windows XP, or it will NOT work. I then got it in DFU mode, white screen, my screen then displayed a pineapple, then BOOM.....jailbroken. I have a 2g touch that was updated two weeks ago with 3.1.1. I was without my touch since then, now I am happy.

Also, why is Quick freedom necessary? it should work fine without all the quickfreedom crap. Did someone forget to tell you that QuickFreedom IS A 2.2.1 JAILBREAK? Not 3.1.1, 2.2.1. And again, the ipsw is jailbroken on its own, once its been through pwnagetool. So you dont need quick freedom.

So now we're able to jailbreak iPod Touch 2g with FW 3.1.1 on windows? I'm glad to hear it. But I have a question to ask:
1. My parents bought me new iPod Touch at Apple Store in NYC on about 14th of September. It comes with FW 3.1 (7C144). Is it a 2G or 3G iPod Touch? If it's a 3G, than it couldn't jailbroken yet, right? Oh my! :-(
After all, I'm new to iPod Touch nor Apple, so I hope this forum can help me. Thanks!

So I can jailbreak by putting my ipod into restore mode, then shift + restore on iTunes with the custom firmware (If I do not wish to use QuickFreedom) Correct?

Hi all..welcome me to Apple and iPod Touch.
I recently purchased iPod touch 2G revised or updated version. I connected to iTunes and got a message that new software update is available. Did that update, now my about shows firmware as 3.1.1
Now, I am sure I should jailbreak. Following this tutorial, will I be able to JB?
I am a total noob, so what is the custom firmware I require? Where can I find it. Please help, or point me to the place where I can find all the information required.

I bought a 2G touch a few weejs ago, had it jailbroken, then updated to 3.1.1. I then lost my jailbreak, then finally this came out, did it, now I am jailbroken. LOL
Winterboard was installed and is working, Cydia works, uninstalled Icy. Syncs nice with Apple, so far so good.

Have just got a Itouch 2g 8gb had it about a week.
So far I have managed to jailbreak 3.0FW.
iTunes keeps asking me to upgrade to 3.1.1 instead... When I upgrade the jailbreak isn't there anymore... In a sence that it is trapped again.
I hear redsn0w is the best jailbreak so that's what I used to unlock my 3.0.
I can't find a release of 3.1.1 on redsn0w.
Anyone know if there has been a release yet or inform me of any similar programs out there.
(don't worry is this site doesn't allow links. I can use google =))

Listen everyone... stop freaking out.
This is NOT anything like greenpois0n. All this is is a way to jailbreak 3.1 that was previously at another firmware on Windows.
You WILL NOT be able to use this method if your ipod came with 3.1 pre-installed. Period. Case closed.
You cannot downgrade a pre-installed 3.1(.1) 8gb "2.5 gen" iPod Touch and currently, there is absolutely no way to downgrade/jailbreak it.
You WILL have to wait for greenpois0n.

thanks for the info and clarification. What firmware does an iPod touch 2g revised or updated version have? I believe it should be 3.0, because I was asked to update the software to 3.1 after I connected to iTunes. So, this shows, my iPod doesnt came with 3.1 installed. Am I right?
If yes, does this tut work for me.
I am ready with all pre-requisites, just need to get a confirmation from you experts and continue.

How is this NOT anything like greenpoison? The only difference is that GP can jailbreak all ipod touches. When all said and done, once the device is jailbroken, all features will be the same.

Sorry, but you are wrong.
This tutorial does not do the same thing as greenpois0n. If you have an iPod Touch 2G that came pre-installed with the 3.1 firmware, this tutorial will not work for you, but greenpois0n will, when it is released.

hey everyone.. i been lurking on this site since i bought my 2g ipod touch.. just wanted to give you an idea of whats going on with this "jailbreak".. from my experience.
First off.. It worked very well an easy to do.. even for me who is not very cpu smart i guess. I had this working off and on for almost 2 days.
BUT.. after about an hour the whole thing crashes and i have to start over. Now somtimes i can just shit click and go right back to my custom 3.1.1 and it will work no prob.. but other times i have to go back to 3.0 and redsnow all over again. So i figured i would try it one more time.. Now i cannot restore for nothing.. no 3.0 no 3.1.1 no custom 3.1.1..
So i just thought id share my story.. I have no idea how to restore my ipod now so as of now i have a useless hunk of metal.. if anyone has any ideas im up to listen to anything..
anyway thanks to everyone who take the time to post all this stuff for us noobs.

or you can just get a custom firmaware and hit shift+restore while you are on 3.0 jailbroken
DO NOT PUT IT IN DFU IF U DO THIS
but if you like extra steps you can take them, you may need the exercise

Yeah, took me a couple times, but it worked like a charm. The only glitch that I ran into was every time I would go into Cydia, I would get the Icy icon, even after I deleted it. But, I went through SSH and deleted it that way, problem solved. I am jailbroken and happier then pigs in shit.

I have downloaded all the necessary files and ready to give it a shot. One more confusing is, in the first page, under step no.11 what does the below line means?
once it is done doing its thing you can open iTunes and SHIFT+CLICK+RESTORE and browse for your copy of the 3.1.1 custom firmware
From a website I have downloaded the necessary firmware, 2.1.1, 3.0 and 3.1
What exactly is a custom firmware? Can I use the 3.1.1 firmware from apple downloads?

You're kidding right? The custom firmware "is" the jailbroken firmware. It's the whole point of jailbreaking. What he means is get a jailbroken (custom) firmware that was created by someone on a mac to use this method. Using quickfreedom allows us to place the jailbroken (custom) firmware on to the ipod touch. The 3.1.1. from Apple is the original unjailbroken version and will not work for this. Whenever someone mentions "custom" firmware weather it's an ipod, PSP, or DS it means it's hacked.

When using quickfreedom, did the DFU instructions, Status bar showed iPod connected in DFU mode. Pre-Jailbreak started automatically. But couldnt get the white screen. Tried unplug/replug, same.
But iTunes opened and showed iPod in recovery mode. Tried restoring 3.1.1 custom, got 1601.
Tried downgrading to 3.0, same 1601.

As many ppl encountered, I got all sorts of number errors. Finally iPod stuck in recovery mode. So, did a normal restore, but iTunes gave an option to update to latest OS 3.1.2
Immediately cancelled it, shift+restore to the 3.1.1 OS. Success!!!
Restored my iPod using backup and now syncing back all the appz, music and vdoz.
Once this is done, will try the above step. Direct update to custom firmware.
Will keep posted.

I beleive my iPod came with 3.1 or 3.1.1. I tried all steps, all firmwares, multiple reboots, dfu's, recover's, 9.0, 9.0.1, 8.2, XP, Win 7..all in vain
Nothing seem to work. If I downgrade to 2.1.1 as suggested in one blog, I get error 20 both in 9.0.1 Win 7 and 8.2 XP.
If I downgrade to 3.0, get 1601.
Tried multiple USB ports, all whatevr can be done. I give up.
Lets wait for an official release.
