alright. so i tried to reinstall the installer app because whenever i added sources they wouldn't show up. so i clicked reinstall and installer crashed. now when I click installer the whole thing crashes and won't open. Can I SSH into my iPod to reinstall it manually? or wouldn't that work? I'm running 1.1.2 firmware.

You can download the Installer here, that's the official repository link: http://repository.apptapp.com/packages/System/Installer.zip

1) Simply copy Installer.app (from the zip file) in the /Applications directory of your iPod, and make sure the programs (Installer, AppTapp.framework/AppTapp) have the executable flag set. You can change that by looking at the file properties in WinSCP, for example.

2) Before launching the program, you should check the application database used by the Installer before it was removed. Just for information:
/var/root/Library/Installer/LocalPackages.plist contains the list of the installed applications, keep this file or you won't be able to update or uninstall your applications!
/var/root/Library/Installer/PackageSources.plist contains the list of the repository sources. If you add a source, it will be stored into this file along with the new repository information fetched on the site.
/var/root/Library/Installer/RemotePackages.plist contains all the applications in the repositories. This file is reconstructed every time a refresh occurs.
/var/root/Library/Installer/TrustedSources.plist is the list of the trusted sources, maintained by the ones who did the Installer. This file is downloaded (that's my hypothesis anyway, it is regenerated if deleted).

Rename the /var/root/Library/Installer directory, for example to /var/root/Library/Installer.backup. Or copy those files to your PC and remove the directory on the iPod.

Launch the Install application, then quit when it has refreshed the sources. Don't install anything, don't add sources yet. It will have created the files again. Put the LocalPackages.plist back in order to be able to update/uninstall your apps.

3) Start Installer again, everything should be back to normal. You can add sources, make sure the repositories are correct or you could end up with the same problem you got in the first place.

I am experiencing a similar issue, tried to upgrade my installer.app to a beta version then it crashed during the install. I tried to restore it using the method posted above, but now when I click on the newly restored installer, it just loads to a blank screen and crashes after like 10 sec. Any ideas how to fix this?

if you have drop copy installed on both devices and download this file to your computer first then drop copy it to your touch it restores the installer app . thanks for all of your help you guys are the greatest. http://repository.apptapp.com/packages/System/Installer.zip

I just checked, and there are in fact two executables, but I suppose you saw that? ;)
If not, I edited the post above. Set the execute flags on those.

i've been having the same problem, and tried the steps outlined above. however, since i dont have openssh on my touch, i cannot edit the flags of the executables. is there another program or way to do that?

also, since i went ahead with the steps anyway, i ended up with the same problem i had before. the only thing i didnt do is edit the flags - i made the backup of my source and restored them correctly. however, when i go into the sources list in installer (on the touch), there are only a few sources - before this procedure i had many more. is this a sign that i did something wrong?

damnit. i had the same problem updating to the new installer beta a few hours ago. when i tried to update, it failed, then whenever i started the installer.app, it would quit to springboard.

But, Scythal, thanks good sir for helping us out! reverted back to an older version, and installer is okay for now :D

You need to jailbreak it. Search for it. Theres a bunch of great tutorials on how to do this.
or just go onto youtube and search for " ipodtouchmaster " he has great videos.

ok i fixed my touch, and i think i figured out the problem: mobilefinder. each time that i opened it to create/move/rename a file, i could no longer install applications with installer.app. after following these directions, my installer works fine. thanks for the guide, and beware of mobile finder. its too bad, because i wanted an easy wasy to open files for mobiletextedit...

Hello all... I too updated Install.app, and now crashes when I tap on it.
Will the method decribed here work with the iPhone? It should right? It is the same firmware... no?

Thank you VERY much in advance for any reply...

install bosstool and reloacate applications. you have run out of space on the firmware partition (only 300mb) where apps are natively stored.

Hi great job with your tuts. they are informative and quick.
My problem: Where can I get the installer program from? It seems that it is a central item to have but i've been frustrated in my attempts to acquire it. Many videos refer to it but so far i've not been able to see one that actually informs me on how to get the installer app into my 1.1.3. Where you said earlier to jailbreak it first, i also would like to understand that better. pardon me if i'm in the wrong section

woot i reinstalled Ziphone without having to reboot my Ipd Touch 16g

The installer wasnt working and wouldn't come up without it taking a minute to load and then go back to the springboard.

so i got SSH up and then i don't know why but learned how to create a key on this Wifi I captured from some one else. lol

Well i have my whole iPod touch back from that stupid error

Lol funny thing is i've been searching way on correcting this without having to wipe my whole iPod and just no one knew what to do and i know many others were having the same thing. Guess i'll try not to reinstall ZiPhone installer. Been searching well over an hour and well i did it my self without having to restore my awesome iPod Touch =)
