Ok, so along with many other week 37 ipod touch owners i had a lot of screen issues. Most people said to just go an exchange it. but to make sure that you had a week 38 one (production week 38 is when the display problems were fixed)

At first people said you could tell if it was a 38 by the front. If it had macy grey it was 38, if it had that other chick it was 36-37. Then it turned out that was wrong, the cover had nothing to do with it, some 37's had macy and some didn't.

The next sure fire thing was the serial number, Week 37 and 36's had a serial number starting in 9C736 or 9C737 so to make sure you got a week 38 all you had to do was find a 9C738, which is what most people did.

So i made the required mac genius appointment (for about 5 minutes after i got to the store, it was so empty) The guy looked at my screen and told me to try and show him the problems. Well for one, most of the problems don't look so bad in bright light, and two i had taken most of the content off. anywho, i did my best to show him, and he agreed it was messed up and wanted to test it under darker lighting conditions but was going to exchange it anyway. So he pulls out a new 16gigger and i check out the box, macy grey, then i ask if i can see the serial number first, and instead of being 9C738 like it should have been, it's 1A738 now i'm hoping the 1A is where it was made, and that it's as good as a 9C but i'm just now unboxing it. I'll let you guys know how good my 1A is.

If anyone else has 1A post your screen problems (or not) here.

Thanks for the link, It's not as bad as the old 9C737 i had but it's no where near perfect, it's still got a little reflectivity if your not an inch away and 100% straight on, but it's good enough for me to deal with, and again only has a few dead pixels.

Ok wait.. i am so confused! Are you saying that ipot with serial numbers 9C738 are defective in some ways?? Cause that was what i just got. So far, i can't really see anything wrong, but then again that could be due to the fact that i was too excited to get it, that i never did a thorough look at it.

So therefore, what exactly is defecftive, and how can i check to see if it is. Also, is apple admitting to this problem? Can i just go down to my apple store and get it replaced.. if so, how long do i have till i can do that?

Thank you.

Just to clarify that the 4th and 5th digits in the serial number are the week in the year that it was made and the 3rd digit is the year it was made. This is the same for all ipods.

E.g. if serial number was9C73766GE3M then the year is 2007 and the week in that year is week 37.

Sorry if everyone already knows this, just thought I would clarify.

if i own a week 37 ipod is it 100% that there is a screen problem. Because it looks like mine is ok, but with nothing to truly compare it too i have no clue about its condition.

I had a 9c737 ipod touch. Took it to the apple store and told the person that my Ipod had the problem with the black in the videos. So he took it back and confirmed that it was bad.

He exchanged it with a new one. I checked the box and it was with Corrinne or whatever her name is. I checked the serial and it was again the 9c737 number. I asked him before I left the store to make sure that this was a good working ipod with clear video and he confirmed it.

I went put some videos back on and it looks alot better than before.

I think some of the 9c737's are good and some are bad. As long as you take it back to the Apple store and have them confirm it, they should be able to replace it.

Thats my 2cents on the situation.

I have a week 38 iPod and the screen is really too bright. I'm not sure if this is the problem with the contrast and I don't want to send my iPod back for nothing. Maybe you can help me by looking at the photos I made..

http://gallery.mac.com/masuri/100018

The most annoying thing is, that the screen turns blue, when I tilt it to the right. Should I send it back to Apple or is this the regular behaviour???

are us sure this is ur serial number or another number. IF it is the serial it does not fit the current serial number encoding that we know. Otherwise it would read as the iPod was made During week 23 of 2006 at site MA

Close. What you are looking at is the Model number. the serial number can be found on the back of the iPod. Also, in the About screen in settings (right above the model number).

Whats interesting is that your model number number is different than mine. Are you using an 8Gig, cause that would explain it. If you have a 16Gig, then there's something weird with model numbers going on.

DevilBoi69x

It is an 8GB but I didn't receive it yet. I just saw some other people talking about their iPoTs' serial numbers before they even received it (different message board) and they made it sound like what I was looking at is the serial number.
Lol. I'm so slow.....
Anyways, Thanx a lot for your help!

at this point if your iPoT is on order, it should be shipped with a working screen. So at this point your really dont have to worry about it serial number.

I bought mine on Nov 23 and the serial start with 1B739.

I get some glare some times on bright light so I don't know if is defective or that is the way is suppose to be.

Video seem to work fine, but I did notice that the contrast is not that good.

I will assume that by now Apple will have the kinks taking care, but maybe they are still trying to figure it out.

So What you are trying to say is that the B is one of the ones that may have the display issues?

Does anyone know if checking the serial number to determine wich unit was prior to week 38 is reliable?

jman2003 said his unit is week 38 and his serial start with 1D73, that is very weird.

How can I have a week 39 and the serial start with 1B73?

Do you think maybe the first 2 of the serial are revision numbers?

I have a 9E748. This is a replacement. I just got it today, and don't know what the deal is, but it already has 8 white spots that stay white and don't change at all no matter what color of the screen is supposed to be! The reason I sent my first one in was because it had these same white spots, but the ones on the one I sent in were brighter. I'm guessing these ARE stuck/bad pixels. Now, how can I have a touch made in week 48 and it already have bad pixels???? I have no glare problems what so ever. The ONLY problem I have ever had with the touch are these small white spots. Apple must agree with me that they do not belong because this is why they sent me a replacement after they checked out the one I sent in under warranty. Now I would say the chances of me being the only one with this problem is slim. So those of you that think you have perfect screens, can you go to your home screen and see any pixels that are white when they should be black? My friends' touches aren't like this, but for some reason my replacement and old one both have had this problem. The odds are pretty rare that if Apple really fixed this problem that I would get the one bad screen made after week 38. I'm so frustrated. Do you guys have any pixels that are always stuck being white? Please check carefully.

Heres the facts.

Not all week 37 ipod touches are bad, only some
and most ipod touches after week 37 should be good

Also for people asking if the part number MA623C/A is their serial number, its not, it called your part number for obvious reasons. And you can't see the ipod touch's serial number from your online order confirmation.

The serial number is located below the part number in the back of your box
and it says (S)Serial No. , and something like 1B444JAW4N

Oh and to the thread starter, i have a 1B model and it's week 44, im guessing the inital alphabet changes every few weeks into developement?

That was the weirdest thing ever.
So I was reading this.
I checked my serial number.
It was 42.
I was like "YES! 42 IS THE ANSWER TO-"
Then suddenly settings crashed
The screen got dark
It was unresponsive for like 10 seconds.
Then Finally the sad iPhone thing came up.
Now it works fine.
Ironic though, eh?

EDIT: Oops!
Sorry, I didn't realize that I just bumped an old thread.
So sorry!
