Can someone explain the way the touch works in terms of conserving a charge? Last night I fell asleep while listening to a podcast - the battery was almost fully charged when I started playing it. When I woke this morning it was considerably depleted. Do I have to manually turn the thing off to stop it draining the battery?

Yes, if you don't stop playing your media the device continues to play.
You must pause your media to allow the device to sleep. Otherwise it just shuts off the screen.

So, after I hit the pause button, it stops playing my music, I can just click the sleep button once, it turns off the screen, and that's all I need to do? I haven't ever completely powered off my ipod touch.

press and hold the power button, then move the slider to shut it off.

Or if your ipot hangs up/crashes hold both buttons until the power shuts off.

So if I'm asleep it'll just keep draining the power? That's really annoying!

the way i think of it is like a laptop: close the lid and it goes to sleep, yet it still drains a little battery, but barely. actually turning it off uses no battery power at all.

No by turning it off using the method that i gave you, you wont use any battery power

I realized that when I unplug the headphones the device shuts off completely, because then I plug them again and there is no sound at all. Does that means the iPodT is off?!?!?!

Yeah I realise that. My problem is that from time to time I'll fall asleep while it's playing something. On my Nano that wasn't a problem - it seemed to conserve all the remaining battery power. When it happened the other night with the touch I lost about 1/3rd of the charge :(

do you expect the iPod to know when you are asleep?

I think what happens is that it just pauses the music when the headphones come out. This is what happens on my nano. it is still on, just paused.

LOL, maybe Apple can address this in a firmware upgrade. That was funny, I agree; just turn it off; or use the sleep function; or accept that the battery will be spent.

either that, or leave it plugged in when you are listening to it, if you think you are gonna fall asleep.

No, but I would like an option where it can be made to shut down when it hasn't been playing anything for, say 30 mins. Is that unreasonable?

Not unreasonable at all. Can't you just use the Sleep Timer?

well it only used a third of the battery cant you just plug it in for a hour... or leave it plugged in?
I do agree that the ipod should shut off after x amount of minutes of inactivity

old ipods would turn off after like 5 mins of inactivity, end of playlist+5 min=off why does this not work the same?
most inefficient........:(

I haven't powered off my ipod touch for at least a week. I just click the button once to set it to sleep. There is very little, if any, battery drain.

Sleep timer?!?
EDIT: Ok, read the manual. Yep, I could, but I want to shut the thing down, not set it to sleep :)

read what I just wrote. You're using virtually zero battery when it goes into sleep mode. I wouldn't leave it in sleep mode if you weren't going to touch it for a week, but if you are going to use it again the next day everything will be fine.

I am reading all these posts and apparantly many people's iPod Touch's are not working correctly.
Here is how my iPod Touch works in play mode. If you are listening to music or watching video and you pause the play. After a couple minutes of being paused the unit will go off by itself. You do not have to do anything else. It will not continue to drain the battery at all. Even the next day, just press the menu button and it wakes on to the wallpaper screen. Just press the slider and you are playing again.
I have checked with several other users and their units work the same way.
If yours does not work this way I would advise you to consider returing it.

I heard that shutting off and rebooting the ipod actually uses more battery then just keeping it in sleep mode. So unless your not using it for a couple of days i think its better to just keep it in sleep
