hackers always end up finding ways to communicate behind the scenes. I doubt there is much apple can do to "slow" the process down. :)

...because a break in the iPod software/firmware equals a break in the iPhone software/firmware. Meaning, once this happens, there will be very little to nothing that apple can do to stop people with iPhones from using any network carrier they want == loss of exclusivity contracts with cell service providers.
And also, how embarrassing would it be to have the iPod hacked into before it is even officially released.
Sadly for Apple, they could have avoided ALL of this by simply letting us install third party apps as easily as on the iPhone

No, it's because hacking of the iPod Touch will allow all the apps that are making people buy an iPhone to be run on both devices.
People are buying an iPhone to use Google Maps, the Mail app, send photos, check email... whether it's on AT&T or not. A route I certainly considered but avoided for two simple reasons:
1) Chance of the device no longer working with updates
2) I'd certainly want to just have one device instead of an iPhone and another cell phone... I would be tempted to connect it legitimately.
They know what they are doing by limiting the apps on the Touch...
