Nice idea, although theres free software for this kinda thing for the Wii so I expect someone will make one free for the iPoT soon.

Still, i'm interested in doing this "old->new" free thing, so if anyone knows where to get the old version lemme know. ;)

I'd be very interested if I could actually download files to my iPod touch. Nice concept though. Id pay more than $20 if I could wirelessly sync. my storage hits a wall when i'll want many movies or tv shows on there because im on vacation and didnt want to bring my powerbook... All in due time, of course, until its been Jailbroken!

How would you do something make a plugin like this without jailbreaking it? Or is it through Safari?

So basically, this is just streaming right? Meaning if you can't access the Wifi or don't have a hotspot at where you're at, you this is useless.

Also, can't you just stream it with a free software? I'm pretty sure there were free softwares out there that you can stream movies and music, although of course it wasn't through itunes.

if so this is totally useless how often are you going to be in a wi-fi hotspot when ur on the go or at school or something. Though, this would be useful if one had an iphone.

bad thing is you need to be in range of your home network...or if you want to stream it from any other internet source, your ISP must be fast uploading stuff...
and there are other free ways....

this is seeqpod with more work, and limited to the music you have. this would work ok for an iphone, but if you're at home why not just use your computer?

seeqpod is far better

and shouldn't this thread be under apps? this isn't a mod...

How did you do that? I'm assuming from the 192.168.1.1 that it is accessing your computer through your network. How were you able to access it through another network?

What and where? DotTunes looks good, but I'm not willing to pay for it because I know that there would be free alternatives.

Hello just my 2cent. For all those PC owners you could look into www.orb.com, it has a working ipod touch/iphone web client that works. It is a bit on the quirky side but works well with a fast enough connection. Plus it does your videos and pictures. Its just limited by the file support on the actual ipod.

DOT.TUNES

Hey all,

If you browse the DOT.TUNES site you'll see some advanced features which take it way beyond the featureset of all competitors.

For example, you can create usernames and passwords and grant access to specific playlists per user - so while user A can access playlists 1 & 2, user B can only access playlist 3 and user C can access all playlists. Then you can allow users to upload files from their remote computer to DOT.TUNES - DT then automatically adds these files to iTunes.

What this means is that an Artist can publish a DOT.TUNES Flash Player on their site, then while they are on Tour they can upload gig audio files back to their DOT.TUNES app, which get added to iTunes and automatically synced into their Flash Player. You can see this in action at http://www.djjazzyjeff.com - while you are there, keep in mind that his entire site is served via DOT.TUNES content. Jeff uses iTunes as his content management system and DOT.TUNES renders this data for the web site.

You can also use DOT.TUNES and your iPhone or iPod Touch as a remote control for your iTunes/AirTunes setup. I'm doing that now, sitting on my sofa with my Touch and as I click a track it plays via my home hifi system via DOT.TUNES - you can of course stream tracks straight to your Touch as well and this option is a user based - so logging in with one user account allows you to use the remote control feature while an alternate user login streams the tracks back to the device.

There are many other advanced features, if you would like to hear more just let me know and I'll post here or email you directly, or just check out the site for more info - http://www.dottunes.net

One of the main reasons why DOT.TUNES is unique is that it is created by a group of Professional Musicians. This explains some of the advanced security options such as encrypted SSL https logins etc - this is not P2P software - quite the opposite, it lets you restrict access to only those who you want to be able to access.

Point your Touch to this address to check out a demo of the Touch interface: http://music.dottunes.net:9998

Cheers

Sorry, the advanced security is there to protect an artists work from being freely downloaded by anyone such as with an App like Limewire. The DOT.TUNES administrator can create usernames and passwords to control access to specific playlists and the https logins and other security measures are there to protect the users tracks from freeloaders.

I went into my router config and forwarded the two ports 5010 and 5012 to my local network address. ie 192.168.1.1 and then I just point the browser to my external ip address that my router is picking up from my cable modem. This stays pretty constant and does not change that often. Same principal as any remote program would work. Not too difficult.

TVersity, and Abyss web server work just as good, you can be protected and encrypted as well, and allowing only certain Mac addresses to enter the network, which is EVEN more secure than most other web applications.

Thanks for thinking of us though!

DOT.TUNES
10-04-2007, 11:46 AM
Yeah it's tough, there are huge differences which can really be seen only when comparing the actual apps rather than the blurbs on the web sites.

For example DOT.TUNES allows you to create usernames and passwords and provide each user with access to different playlists. This is a key feature which most of our users can not do without. Then there are features such as Uploading files to DOT.TUNES which automatically get added to iTunes - then there are advanced features such as xml feeds and live sql requests to extract data from DOT.TUNES for use in other services. DOT.TUNES can even upload static xml feeds to a web server for high load servers which require data for flash players etc without the need to constantly query the DT sql database.

To get an idea of some of these advanced features, check out http://www.djjazzyjeff.com/

Jeff's site uses some of these advanced features and allows Jeff to use iTunes as his content management system for his site. All those menu items and site content is served via DOT.TUNES and special iTunes Playlists. Then when Jeff is out on the road touring he uploads tracks from gigs straight into iTunes which are then available on his site, myspace etc via the DOT.TUNES Flash Player.

There are many other unique features which I'd love to blab about but I'm sure this isn't the place for a full feature run down - but in response to your comment about these other servers "working just as good" - I'm sure they do work well but they don't replicate the DOT.TUNES featureset.

Cheers

Question: does this support playlists playing each track in turn WITHOUT manual intervention

ie select playlist and play -- as much one would do as if playlist was on ipod.
Most "home grown" streaming solutions require each track to be selected in turn..

DOT.TUNES
10-25-2007, 12:46 AM
There seems to be only one way to do this and that's to render a new big file containing a bunch of other tracks.

The problem is that Apple has prevented almost every type of streaming - no Flash, no m3u, no ajax trickery to make one track play and then another - it seems intentional that these techniques have been blocked.

It is very important to us to nail this feature.

DOT.TUNES, I would consider getting this and signing up for your service if you were to make an app for the iPod that would give me some sort of fancy GUI so I can browse that way: possibly set up similar to the Mobile iTunes store; hopefully set up as a cross between the Mobile iTunes store and the Music player built into the iPod..

Are you guys considering creating one once the SDK comes out?

DOT.TUNES
10-25-2007, 05:27 AM
Yeah we'd love to do that once the SDK arrives.

It is quite a fancy GUI provided by the plugins now - similar to the other iPhone/Touch GUIs - sliding windows etc.

Check out the demo using your iPhone or Touch here:

Hey all,

An Update for DOT.TUNES will be available in a few days with some great new features.

While viewing any playlist you can enter an email address to send someone a direct link to listen to or download files from that playlist.

This is a free update for all existing users and this functionality is also available in the free version.
