From what I've seen from screens I've taken apart, there is little more to a screen than the screen itself.
for example, the PSP screen:

If that tiny edge is all that is only necessary for structural support, would it be possible to remove it completely?
Imagine a display that from the front, appeared to be simply a black pane of glass.
From the back it looks like a normal monitor.
Why not?
Someone tell me why I haven't seen this.

Calculator LCDs don't have frames...
Then again, this is a complete different case :P

Yes they do. Search "Calculator LCD disassembled" and look at the second pic. I'd put it here myself but I'm on my Touch.

I actually saw a list (with pix) of all the ipof touch and iphone parts. like ALL OF THEM. they were all seperate too. Dont bother asking for a link because:
1) I dont have it
2) It was a thing for his company and you have to pay for it (its like $40000/yr or something because they do like EVERY gadget.)
So yeah. :D

It's actually part of the whole front.

that's a good idea but doesn't it almost need an edge for a little support because I mean if you had only a screen and dropped it instead of maybe chipping the side of the iPod you would chip the the edge of screen... Which would cause failure throughout and youd be left with paper weight

What if it was a desktop monitor?
Also, a chipped or cracked screen doesn't mean catastrophic meltdown.
If it were on an ipod, maybe the top pane of glass could be cheap to replace, in the even of chippage.

well I guess that's true maybe it could come with extra glass that you could use to replace it... And now that you made me think about it it would actually be chipping the glass and not the LCD screen so the whole screen might not fail like it did in my phone when I broke a little part of the LCD in it

Phones have plastic screen covers, not glass.
When it breaks, it's because it was pressed really hard and it cracked the LCD behind it. Glass doesn't do that.

It looks kind of cool to me. That would be super cool, if I could take that and make it about 16 times larger. The possibilities...

Almost like this?

ok but iPod touches have glass... Which would shatter if you dropped it and it had no edges to protect it and you would have to replace it

Glass doesn't shatter when you drop it, if it's mounted to something, like an iPod.
The edges might chip a bit, but the support of the metal frame behind it will keep it from shattering.
Also, a rounded edge on the glass will chip less easily.
I don't think chipping would be very common.
Maybe I'll test this.

testing it would be great and make a video if you do... I honestly hope you prove me wrong it would be pretty awesome if screens didn't have edges...

I'll find a piece of glass, and cut a piece of plywood it fit it.
I'll glue them together, and sand the edges of the glass into curves.
Then I'll drop it on cement repeatedly. We shall see.

but to buy the glass for the touch its like $150 but u have to buy the LCD too which is included in the price! And that voids the warranty. But to send it to apple is the same price and sometimes lower.

this sounds like an awesome idea! i would love an edgeless computer monitor. it would be so nice looking, like the mac [ß] shopped, that looks so slick. :p i dont know about the ipod concept but if it didnt chip or brake in your test then i guess it would be good. it would look definetly look nice.

I'm not going to use real iPod glass for testing.
If they made an iPod like this, they wouldn't include the LCD+electron sensor in the glass.

Thanks! :D
