With Apples Appstore and 2.0 software update for the iPod Touch and iPhone to be released with a the next month, a immense competition shall begin between Appstore and Installer. Both have different sides:
Installer: Up and running with many applications for current public software
Appstore: Beta, and not released to the public, and no current Apps.
One over time will kill the other. No doubt about that. Lets look at the full view of the pro's and con's
Installer:
Pros:Lots of Apps, public, running, free.
Cons:Requires hack, not many very powerful dev people or teams on the job of creating apps, crumbling because of framework change from 1.1.4 to 2.0
Appstore:
Pros:In actual Apple Firmware, many powerful dev teams such as EA, easier to use dev tool, current with frameworks.
Cons:Not public, cost money to even get firmware.
Users already jailbroken may get left behind because of no applications to date are capable to install apps on 2.0 Firmware except Appstore. For this reason, there will eventually be an amazing app in Appstore that will cause at least half of the 1.1.4 jailbroken community to convert 2.0
Bigboss' take on the 2.0 firmware at
http://www.ipodtouchfans.com/forums/showthread.php?t=65673
So the questions are:
Will Appstore be as popular as Installer?
Will Appstore kill Installer?
Will Installer overpower Appstore?

Chances are...
Installer will Co-exist with the AppStore.

Psh, there is no "Chance". Installer will co-exist with Installer. Psh, do you think that people are just going to was to sit back and BUY apps from Apple. No! They will want some for free. So they will use App store to get good games and apps etc, and installer for free stuff.

knowing apple, and their stupidity...
There will probably be an "appstore exploit" to put Installer in the AppStore xD.

Will Appstore be as popular as Installer?
It depends if Apple's restrictions are too much for people but, it has a good chance.
Will Appstore kill Installer?
Not likely, because there will always be certain people who like doing whatever they want and not having restrictions.
Will Installer overpower Appstore?
Not sure, but we'll find out.

App Store will have the apps and like ALL of the apps we have today, you get a demo. Installer will either host the cracks or a way to get around it - in my eyes. This way Installer will sstill live, and devs can do what they do.
Or, Installer will die, and KCNScrew Mobile will arise.

Dev teams Will not Die.
Developers Will not Die.
Dev Teams will die. Example:
Dav Team died this week
TouchRev was hacked, another flaw of installer.
Sources will eventually become hacked or other and be taken down by somebody.

DavTeam = Not A Real Dev Team. Just a bunch of Kiddies who liked pictures.
TouchRev = What does being hacked have to do with Dev teams dying? People/Companies get hacked all the time. They move on.
Installer is just a means of distribution (same as torrents). It has nothing to do with the death of Developers.

This makes as much sense as me saying the Internet will die because flabigast.org was hacked, the creators of gogofudgenet.net have disbanded and the site wootnewt.com was taken down.
These thigns happen, and as the saying goes "As one door closes, another opens"

Appstore will no doubt provide more polished apps because the devs will get PAID for them rather then the current system where most get by with Donations and then get flamed for wanting money for their hard work.
Appstore will limit the functionality of some apps (they will not be able to run in the background, so summerboard or mobilescrobbler will be impossible from appstore) so if you want to keep customization of your device you will need some kind of Jailbreak. Installer itself is an application that downloads software from the internet and installs it on your iPod, as long as there is a way to jailbreak 2.0 firmwares to allow SSH access or direct cable access with software like TotalCommander then you should be able to install third party apps (manually without installer) and and appstore apps at the same time.
The real question is will third party developers convert their free apps to run on 2.0 (which we know is very different from previous firmwares and existing apps will not work on) or will they just offer 2.0 versions in app store for which they get paid for. Most I think will go app store to get a reward for the effort they put in, third party will still remain because of the restrictions Apple will try to impose, but I expect most third party apps to be Shareware with limited free versions that will be unlocked on full payment for the working version.

Very true.
Now we start playing "I will survive....." song. :D
Besides apple/appstore will never have NES or gpsphone for free.
I only want the appstore because of spore.
Yeah Davteam:rolleyes: I don't think I had heard of them other than this thread.

Maybe. I think that better quality stuff will come out of the appstore, but it will be outrageously expensive. I dunno we will see. For now Installer FTW.

installer will be rewritten for 2.0 and most of the good apps will be to!
so this thread is stupid because when i change to 2.0 installer and appstore wont "kill" each other! i think they will become friends on my ipod and live happily ever after!

I know someone who is collecting all the betas of 2.0 because
he had a really great idea that since the final will probably be locked up from jailbreaking for the time being, and everybody upgrading, that apple would essentially forget about the betas and that would allow major hacking/jailbreaking of the betas, resulting in people getting possible installer apps AND possible appstore apps.
Edit: Jesus!! That is a really long sentence

Your logic would be flawless if it weren't for the fact that there will be plenty of free apps in the App Store.

Not that completely as you think, remember that iPoT/iPhone got unix-like system inside, theres stuff that will never change :p making 1.1.4 to 2.0 is not hard if you give developer an API changes list :> it's a matter of next version ^^'
Gitykins
06-29-2008, 09:18 AM
Well, different enough frameworks for 1.1.4 apps to be unusable on 2.0 immediately.
