errr take a look at this story. How did everyone miss it??
SNOW LEOPARD UNVAILED

Since 2001, Mac OS X has delivered more than a thousand innovative new features. With Snow Leopard, the next major version of the world’s most advanced operating system, Mac OS X changes more than its spots, it changes focus. Taking a break from adding new features, Snow Leopard — scheduled to ship in about a year — builds on Leopard’senormous innovations by delivering a new generation of core software technologies that will streamline Mac OS X, enhance its performance, and set new standards for quality. Snow Leopard dramatically reduces the footprint of Mac OS X, making it even more efficient for users, and giving them back valuable hard drive space for their music and photos.

http://images.apple.com/uk/macosx/snowleopard/images/exchange20080609.pngSnow Leopard includes out-of-the-box support for Microsoft Exchange 2007 built into Mail, Address Book, and iCal. Mac OS X uses the Exchange Web Services protocol to provide access to Exchange Server 2007. Because Exchange is supported on your Mac and iPhone, you’ll be able to use them anywhere with full access to your email, contacts, and calendar.
Multicore

“Grand Central,” a new set of technologies built into Snow Leopard, brings unrivaled support for multicore systems to Mac OS X. More cores, not faster clock speeds, drive performance increases in today’s processors. Grand Central takes full advantage by making all of Mac OS X multicore aware and optimising it for allocating tasks across multiple cores and processors. Grand Central also makes it much easier for developers to create programs that squeeze every last drop of power from multicore systems.

To accommodate the enormous amounts of memory being added to advanced hardware, Snow Leopard extends the 64-bit technology in Mac OS X to support breakthrough amounts of RAM — up to a theoretical 16TB, or 500 times more than what is possible today. More RAM makes applications run faster, because more of their data can be kept in the very fast physical RAM instead of on the much slower hard disk.

Using media technology pioneered in OS X iPhone, Snow Leopard introduces QuickTime X, a streamlined, next-generation platform that advances modern media and Internet standards. QuickTime X features optimised support for modern codecs and more efficient media playback, making it ideal for any application that needs to play media content.

Because Snow Leopard delivers the fastest implementation of JavaScript to date, web applications are more responsive. Safari runs JavaScript up to 53 percent faster with Snow Leopard.*
OpenCL

Another powerful Snow Leopard technology, OpenCL (Open Compute Library), makes it possible for developers to efficiently tap the vast gigaflops of computing power currently locked up in the graphics processing unit (GPU). With GPUs approaching processing speeds of a trillion operations per second, they’re capable of considerably more than just drawing pictures. OpenCL takes that power and redirects it for general-purpose computing.

And the ability to be Future Proof in terms of RAM. :)

ok that is quite good but still, i see it more as an update to the current osx not as a completely new os

Exactly. This isn't an all-out new operating system, and once again, we're browsing the "iPod touch fans" forum. I'm sure that if you were to visit a Mac-enthusiasts forum, you would definitely find much more information, and talk, on the Snow Leopard OS X 10.5.6

Mac OS X sucks. It's basically an expensive form of free BSD.

There is no Set release date for Snow Leopard but its somewhere around NEXT YEAR from what I'm hearing it, so it's pretty logical to sell it for a Price. Also, it's more geared toward the Media industry where they actually utilize Multi-Core and RAM to Edit and Render films. This is a real must for those kind of industries.

Mac OS X sucks. It's basically an expensive form of free BSD.

And Windows is....?

very true. It once took me 3 days to save a "cough"pirated"cough" video of Pirates of the Caribbean 3, simply because i didnt have enough RAM ect

Apple comes out with too many OS too soon in my opinion. Instead of releasing a major update (i.e. a service pack in the Windows world), Apple releases a "new" operating system every year to year and a half that Mac users spend almost a hundred and fifty dollars to get to not feel outdated. Since the first Mac OS X release in 2001, there have been 7 releases of OS X. Now, lets look at windows, XP was released also in 2001 and had two service packs and another release in 2007 (Vista). Apple is greedy, they made fun of Microsoft when announcing Leopard (Steve jobs quote: "the basic version is $130, the premium is $130, the business is $130 and the ultimate is $130!"), but when you add up the 130 dollars a mac user spends over the course of 1 microsoft release from the first OS X, Cheetah, to Tiger (the releases made over the life of XP), it totals around 650! Microsoft isn't over priced, Apple is!

That was my rant of the day and i must say it was satisfying

Mac OS X Panther: Released 2003.
Mac OS X Tiger: Released 2005.
Mac OS X Leopard: Released 2007.

I don't see how that could fit the "One Every Year" logic. With Mac OS X, you have a CHOICE to upgrade. There are many MANY users still using Tiger, and strangely, even Panther.

You say Mac OS X is more expensive... Well, what are the prices of Windows XP and Windows Vista?

Google Tells me:

http://img.skitch.com/20080611-jhxf4yg4ha5bbjctbrqixcyw42.jpg

And for Windows Vista? The prices vary from: $119 (Home Basic Area) to $319 (Ultimate Area)

You have to pay a PREMIUM to get more Features. Nuh uh, I ain't paying for a Gimped OS. Its either Linux or Mac OS X for me baby. Also, one other thing I hate about Windows: ACTIVATION. Way to show distrust to your users. Mac OS X and Linux does not worry you about activation. Aside from Mac OS X Server, which has activation but that is because it is mainly for Companies.

1) I said every 1 - 1 and a half years a new OS is released. Tiger is an exception, lasting for about two years but it averages out considering that OS X 10.1 (Puma) was released six months after 10.0 Cheetah. It's like having windows 95 when there's vista. You don't want to be out dated do you?

2) The Mac OS by itself cost vastly less than the Vista OS (I think Xp is about the same price as OS X right now). However, If you buy two of the five Mac OS upgrades in the lifespan of one microsoft OS it evens out (Vista premium is $220 for the full version, $100 for the upgrade; Each new OS X release has cost $130 each, buy two and it's a total $260).

3) Yea i see were your coming from with the different versions. It's not gimped but if there was one version with all the features, everyone would pay an extra $100 for features that most people won't use (video backgrounds for example). Personally I think it's a decent idea considering the preceding but it can be confusing for inexperienced computers (like the old lady buying her first computer not you).

4) Linux is free, no need for varied pricing or activation, duh.

5) What's so bad about activation?

They still support Tiger and even Panther to some extent. They support their OS even though their New OS is up and running. Same as what Windows does.

2) The Mac OS by itself cost vastly less than the Vista OS (I think Xp is about the same price as OS X right now). Like I said, you have a choice to upgrade your Operating system. Going from Tiger to Leopard, Apple hasn't put any pressure on it's user aside from Xcode.

Tiered Pricing is almost never a good thing.

4) Linux is free, no need for varied pricing or activation, duh.

Last I checked, there were actually distros of Linux that cost money. Not all of Linux is Free and not All Linux is Free :)

5) What's so bad about activation?

How many times can you install and Activate Windows before it locks you out completely?

How much could they really charge people for just a faster version of the OS they have now?

I don't think its going to be as much as leopard was. if they charge.
