i found a program called Paint.net that edits .png images. I've been making my own custom icons with it, its fairly easy and it even lets you do the transparent effects.
what i've done so far is pretty rough, but here's an example.

I edited the music, video and safari apps in the dock on the bottom.

Sorry if this was old info, but I'm a super noob and I cant figure out the search on this forum, it was a bit difficult finding a free editor that worked.(well for me anyways)

yea, I use Paint.NET as well, I've gotten used to it over the years and I like it more than photoshop.

I like Photoshop more... Pro Photoshop :)

Any Photoshop is better...and now in CS3 you can even use Fireworks, which is even a little better...it's the actual "web design" product...

its easy, fun, not horribly ugly, & can manage fairly simple editing tasks

all of the png images on the ipod can only be read by the ipod. get the pngs from other themes

Is it possible to make album artwork transparent for use with coverflow.
I tried using photoshop but the png transparencies don't transfer to coverflow.

You can also use gimp too.

If you are having trouble viewing the png's that you pull off of the iPod Touch check this out.
