I have noticed a lot of these sorts of topics popping up so I thought that I would provide a guide on how to convert these previously unreadable png's to ones readable by your computer.

[HOWTO] Convert png's from the iPod Touch to readable png's on Windows

Step 1)
Download this file:
http://www.sendspace.com/file/lgepqf

Step 2)
After the download is done you can extract the archive by using winrar or your preferred rar decompressor.

Step 3)
Extract the folder from the rar.
You should have a directory named fixpngWindows in front of you.

Step 4)
Copy and paste the files you would like to convert into the "png" subdirectory.

Step 5)
Now simply run iPhoneFixPng.exe and press convert

If all went well your new, readable, png's should be in the "fixed" subdirectory!
All Credit goes to the developer of this app, all I did as make this guide and upload the files ;).
Mac/Linux/BSD/Unix guide can be made if there is a demand

Mods, is there any chance of a sticky :)?

[HOWTO] Convert png's from the iPod Touch to readable png's on a MAC

I want to start off by saying that I did not make this. I only compiled the information and made it possible here for you guys. I didn't know if I should add a direct link to their site. I know it will be useful.
Credit goes to the guys over at Hack the iPhone. Thanks guys!

That being said, here we go. . .
_____________________________________

This was tested with OS X (10.4.10 & 10.5)

Step 1

Grab all of the files that you want to convert off of the iPod and put them on your desktop or where ever is convenient for you.
If you try to view stock graphic files in the firmware, you'll see they refuse to display.

Step 2.

Next you will need to download this nifty little script to take care of the work.
It is called FixPng and you will need to download it here (http://rapidshare.com/files/83474134/FixPngDroplet_.zip)

Once you have done that. Go ahead and open that folder. This is what you will see.

http://www.ipodtouchfans.com/forums/imgcache2/50300.png

From there, you will want to double click the libjpeg-libpng (universal).dmg file.

Then double click this package and follow the directions and install.
http://www.ipodtouchfans.com/forums/imgcache2/50301.png

Step 3.

Copy the FixPngDroplet into any other folder on your system.
http://www.ipodtouchfans.com/forums/imgcache2/50302.png

*NOTE* It won't work in the downloaded program folder. I put mine in Applications.

Step 4.

Now drag whatever icon you want to convert, and drop it onto the FixPngDroplet program icon. You can drag multiple icons into the program at once if you like.

You will get a pop up window as soon as the file is converted. It will be converted and saved in the same location it was dragged from.

Here is the pop up that you will get and an example of what the converted image will look like
http://www.ipodtouchfans.com/forums/imgcache2/50303.png

Note: sometimes you might have to put the graphic you want to convert into the same folder as the droplet and then drag them to the droplet to get this to work. I myself have had to do this.

WARNING- The APP will corrupt any PNG that has already been fixed!
In other words. . . Don't drag the same file on there twice. Once is enough

I truly hope that this will help some people out. I know it did for me.
Have fun and happy editing.

Once again I would like to thank the guys over at Hack the iPhone for all of this useful information.I would also like to thank Will4042 for giving me the idea to make this.

How about a STICKY guys so that this doesn't get lost. Thanks.

All you have to do is open up PhotoShop and make the background transparent and save it as a PNG.

It isn't that hard...

Ok, so if i were to make a PNG on my comp i would have to convert it before making it usable as a slider on my ipod touch?

umm this may sound stupid but what is a png?

DJisBack

Portable Network Graphics (PNG) is a bitmapped image format that employs lossless data compression. PNG was created to improve upon and replace the GIF format, as an image-file format not requiring a patent license. The PNG initialism is optionally recursive, unofficially standing for “PNG's Not GIF”. PNG was designed for transferring images on the Internet, not professional graphics.
So it basically is another format for a picture file. Such as jpg, gif, tiff & etc.
Hope that helps.

All you have to do is open up PhotoShop and make the background transparent and save it as a PNG.

no...
this is for images from the touch
they have flipped color channels and thus cant be read in a standard image viewer

this flips the color channels and cleans up the png to be read

Ok, so if i were to make a PNG on my comp i would have to convert it before making it usable as a slider on my ipod touch?
no the touch can read standard png's aswell :)

I use GIMP when on linux but thats beside the point, you cant flip the color channels in linux (without wine or equivalent) so it is still unreadable

It seems to be working fine, but when I go to open the png then its just a black screen, no matter what theme i get it from...help?

that is because third parties made the themes, and they didnt use the flipped color channels

WOW! Thanks! I was just going to post a topic on what were the filenames of the wi-fi bars and I needed pictures next to them so I can re-create the Verizon Bars for the iPod Touch. You know, just as an example, but now all i gotta do is simply drag and compare! Thanks a bunch! By the way, when I'm finished, I'll post it in the themes section for anyone who wants it. I'd appreciate feedback! :)

P.S: Signature is innacurate! I actually just jailbroken to 1.1.2 and installed 40+ apps, thanks to the DEV Team ;)

sigh.. there is a MUCH easier way.. this thing works perfectly and without conversion.

google i-funbox - download, unzip, plug in your ipod, run.
it finds it.. and viola, you are linked in.. when you transfer images from touch to pc (windows) the app transfers them properly so they work without conversion!

THIS PROGRAM KICKS ASS! (and..its FREE!!!!)

Only problem:

It doesn't convert files with a space in their name. You just have to delete the space and then add back in once it's converted.

"Error flipping channels!!!
File not found!"

Please help
