I cant get my iPod to connect to my school's secure wireless network. I dont know what setting to use ro anything. I tried typing in the mac/ip address my laptop has when its on the wireless network but no luck. I have a logon name and a pw for the network...but am i suppose my logon as the "client id" and my pw when it asks for it? Cuz ive tried everything but it wont let me connect. That would be a huge disappointment if i cant use the wifi on campus! I couldn't get my xbox to connect to the network either at first, until I put in a subnet mac, etc but that was using a a wired connection if it matters. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

if your school is smart, they have RADIUS set up: only domain members can access the wireless network, and the iPoT cannot join a domain

or, more likely, you typed in the password wrong, or put the wrong type.

Ya it does ask for my password, Ive tried it so many times so i know i entered it correctly. When I use my school provided laptop there is no need for a password or username. But I know to use the pw/user name combo from my school email address when trying to connect the iTouch because the tech department says thats what to use for connecting a mac to the network.

I tried the correct password and username. So I know that that is not the problem.

on my touch i had to type all of my settings in manually ie. useing "static"

nintendodude
09-18-2007, 11:55 AM
well, that means that your acccess point is not providing DHCP and that all hosts must manually be configured; a pain in the ass on a large network.

if it is YOUR router, enable DHCP and you will be happy with the results :)

no i have DHCP enabled on my router. But for some reason I would have to type in all the settings manually

its a linksys router im the only one within five miles that has a wirless network lol i'll get a screenshot proving DHCP is enabled

ok. chang the Starting ip lease to 192.168.0.1, then clear the address pool and re-connect the devices using automatic settings.

probably a MAC filter

Methinks that your school has a proxy.
Check your network setting on your laptop (Mac?) Network/Proxies then either WebProxy or Automatic Proxy Config?
This would still require a login/pwd when accessing the network.
Hence, it is not enough to just have the login/pwd. The proxy is required!

What I found out is the iphone and itouch current does not support WPA2 enterprise AKA peap-mschapv2. A lot of Companies and Universities use this type of WIFI network.

We are not alone on this one, a lot of iphone owners are also complaining to Apple.

Wow, thats surprising that it doesn't support all of the security schemes.

Maybe the CPU usage from decrypting WPA2 takes too much battery? Does other wireless devices handle this encryption scheme as well?

A lot of Hand Held support that since corporate users must have WPA Enterprise to use the company WIFI

Did you set up the wireless connection through the Touch?

if you ask me linksys is CRAP

the girlfriends house has a linksys router, mine a netgear

i've never had a problem with netgear

however anytime at her house i'll be browsing the web on my ipod touch and it will just dump the connection and have to look for it again..

veryniceipod

Happens to me too.. I had a Netgear router and then chose to get the Linksys WRT54G router. My Netgear had never caused me any problems, the only reason i bought the Linksys was because i thought it was an upgrade. It drops the connection once a week, and it's a pain in the duff to get the connection back again. The next router i get is going to be a Netgear Gigabit wireless N.

i know what you mean, Linksys routers at school need to be rebooted every day or twice sometimes. i use my Netgear at home heavily, and it has not been rebooted for a little over a year, except for when the power goes out.

whatproblems
09-22-2007, 05:03 PM
at the girlfriends house now

was using AIM on the ipod touch to talk to people for a good 20 minutes.. then the router just started disconnecting almost every 2 minutes... it's ridiculous, so i just shut the ipod touch off cuz it was killing my battery pointlessly

linksys = a joke

how would i reboot the router anyway? just unplug and replug? or are there buttons on it to reset it?

also, once it is reset, will it become stupid and not let any computer hooked to it through an ethernet cable on properly?

veryniceipod
09-22-2007, 05:26 PM
To reset a router: If there is a power button on it - turn off the router and leave it off for about 15 - 20 seconds or so, and then turn it back on. It's now rebooted.
If there is no power button on it - pull the power cable out of the router, and leave it out for 15 - 20 seconds, and plug it back in. It's now rebooted.

Hope that helps.

well said, vni

the best thing to do is feed that damned Linksys router to the jackals and buy a fresh Netgear router for you lady friend.

thanks I'll try that next time I'm there... it won't mess up the computers there right? like they won't have to re-enter the routers driver info and such?

the routers driver info? lol.

do a restart, not a reset. holding the reset button may cause the router to looser its configuration information, such as the SSID and the security info. just unplug, sing yankee doodle, and plug it back in.

doing a normal reset should not delete all info only a hard reset would, but you dont gotta worry about it,

i too am unable to connect to the school network. from what i could gather about the school network (from the ignorant computer help desk, and my friends with iphones) the school uses a VPN.

as far as i can tell the ipod touch has no VPN capabilities. is this correct? am i screwed?:(

I think he's saying that his school is equipped with a TTLS/PAP network and the iPoT does not support that security protocol (ful fledged browser...yeah right!)

but on another note, does anyone know how to get TTLS to work?? I have that at my school as well.

If the network require a user name/password WPA2 type security AKA 802.1x you are screwed, since the WPA2 in iphone/itouch is foe WPA2 personal not enterprise, it won't take a user name as input

Perhaps there is a solution for this 802.1x issue ... at least for iphone users:

http://db.tidbits.com/article/9182

Will that work on the ipod touch too?

unfortunately no. this requires a unlocked touch with which third party applications may be installed.

(i don't actually know if it would work after the machine is unlocked though. i stopped reading after i saw that it was a third party application)

For all, who have this 802.1x problem:

http://www.petitiononline.com/iphonewf/

But that is only a software issue and I hope Apple will fix it with next update or there will be a third party application which fixes this issue hopefully. I would work on this by myself but I do not know what to do. I would be very pleased if somebody could help me. Maybe somebody know how to get a 802.1X Connection with the terminal or something like that.
