is anyone else getting this poor of battery life? did i get a dud?

that's how it is with any battery operated device.

First time you charge, it will not very well. After you drain, you use it all, charge again, drain, charge. After a few cycles, the battery will work as intended.

i have done two power cycles so far, complete charge and dis-charge.

i did, however, fail to completely charge the iPoT prior to first use, i was so PUMPED to use it that i just said "screw it" to my prior knowledge of Li-on batteries.

i am also suffering from "horrible black" syndrome, although not to the extent that it is stated else where. either way, this sucker may be returned once the hardware mods. have been done by apple

Maybe you should try talking to an Apple genius to see what they have to say about the battery?

Hi I have a Touch, and the battery has been fairly good for me. Nothing like what the Apple site claims (22 hours I think) but it's been about 3-4 with watching movies for about an hour, browsing, lots of cover flow, etc.

Is it a problem not to charge Li-Is to their full extent? I always heard that Lithium Ion batteries don't really need to be charged fully because they don't have a battery memory.

thats correct, somewhat.

Li-On batteries dont have a "memory" issue, that is the old Ni-Cd batteries from yonder years. Li-On batteries should not be dependant on regular cycles to keep their life, however it doesnt hurt to do one complete cycle every now and then.

e.g.
if you have a laptop, do not just leave it plugged in alll the time. the battery will be ruined 9 months later. batteries need to be used or they crap out

I am learning that turning the iPoT on and off throughout the day when you want to use it, spends a ton of battery power. I think it is made to be like a cell phone and have it on sleep mode in your pocket. You have to remember it is not like a normal iPod, because it has to open OS X.

How about using it with Wi-Fi off, otherwise it's constantly searching for a connection.

Well the battery IS pretty small. They should have made the case the same size as the iPhone's and used the extra space to include a bigger battery and a microcard memory expansion slot.

i dont know if thats true i mean i still didnt try it but the wifi thing i think only tries to connect every now and then but yah if youre not using it then turn it off,

Cheers,
Ben.

yeah what ever I was just trying to help, it has worked for me. And about apple putting abigger battery memory card slot in the iPoT, I agree for the battery but I don't think we will ever see an Apple portable with a memory card slot, especially on an iPod.

the battery, physically, is large enough (80something % of the iPhones) so the capacity should not be that much of an issue. i think it is just that cumbersome, still buggy OS X Mobile that is drawing all the juice.

why would someone actually TURN OFF the iPoT when not using it, just tap the button and "sleep it"....

some people...

nintendodude
09-18-2007, 12:34 PM
about what? i honestly think that the battery in the iPoT is big enough to be sufficiant, if things were ideal.

i am being sarcastic about nothing, for now.

please remember that the 22 hours that apple promised are AUDIO only...no WI-FI and just listening o music....if you have wifi on then itll drain your battery faster...

Yeah wi-fi and video will drain the battery the most.

well, that kindof goes without saying...

it seems that Apple has really made this sucker to hit that magic number only in the most recockulous of cimcumstanes, though

who is going to simply put it in shuffle with the screen off and not touch their TOUCH for 22 hours straight?

that number is unreasonable, it is more like 4 hours if you are multi tasking.

veryniceipod

Yeah, but they try to make it look better by putting a larger number.

there is a FINE line between marketing and lying, buddy.

the conditions under which the iPoT gets 22 Hrs of play time are absurd and are by no means the way that many people will use the device.

in my personal testing, i got fewer than 11 hours with the volume at half, and the screen off. i let it play till it died, and got 10:45 out of it. music was between 128-256 KBbs and all MP3

this is wat i saw on reviews on other website...

playing ONLY VIDEO, up to around 5+hrs
playing ONLY audio, up to around 22+hrs..

well, do not know how true n reliable this review is...

It's still not lying. I know the device is unusable but if you can get 22 hours out of the device, then why not advertise it? It's a marketing strategy.

nintendodude

i know, but its very misleading information.

either way, it gets fairly good battery life, good enough for an afternoon, but you def. need a car charger.

that does not make any difference it still is correct because technically you could get 22hrs out of it, so please stop complaining, its not lying, if they would write 40hrs thats something else, b/c theres no way it could go that long,

Cheers,
Ben.

I usually get around three hours of web browsing before my battery says that it is low. But, if I keep the wifi off, like if I'm just driving around and listening to music, then the battery almost seems to go all night.

Just thought ide throw in my 2 cents... if found originally that the battery drained pretty quickly, but after more use, i was able to to watch two full movies... about 3 and a half hours worth of actual video, listen to some podcasts for at least an hour, and just browse randomly with it over the course of a day, probably 8 hours or so, it wasnt on the full time, but the battery only got down to about 20% at the end, I got a warning on battery time close to when I was done using it, then watched video for another 20 minutes or so, and it was still fine.

So audio is roughly 20 hours, video about 4. Is there a determined amount for wifi?

nintendodude

wireless drains the battery quite quickly, especially with the browser re-rendering all the images and stuff.
