QFT. An iPod Touch is not a phone or a camera. There isn't a single MP3 player on the market that has a camera but not a phone. Go buy an iPhone if you like complaining so much. They have more features and I'm sure you could find a no-contract iPhone 3G for about $450 on craigslist, or an iPhone 1G for $400. Not too much more then an iPod Touch, and you're getting a helluva lot more then just a camera.

Additional media creation in the way of photo/video. If it can create audio then it's not a far cry to say that it would fit with a camera.
I would never trade the speakers for a camera, I'm just saying that a camera isn't exactly a far fetched idea for a PMP with as much power as iPod Touch.

If Apple wanted to, they could easily add a camera to the iPod Touch, no problem. It's not like it's hard. But the thing is, I'm sure Apple figured the demand wasn't high enough for a camera to be placed on an iPod, and it would have definitely increased production costs and make design changes necessary (like the reflective backing). So I think that if the demand is high enough, Apple will eventually add a camera. But right now, it just isn't so buy an iPhone if you really want a camera. And besides, I haven't heard of a PMP with a camera (that isn't a phone). And usually, Apple isn't the first to the market with their ideas; they just take them and do them better. So until you see a PMP with a camera for sale, I doubt you'll see an iPod with a camera.

Well I know that the speaker, unlike the iPhone's speaker, has no external holes for it, so I'm sure it's slightly lower quality then the iPhone, but Engadget mentioned that the speaker doesn't sound half-bad, so it should be fine.

I hadn't seen a PMP with an accelerometer and multitouch either, so the fact that there's no precedent set for it is superfluous.
I understand the decision on Apple's part. It's not that big of a thing really, all I'm saying is that it would be nice, and not only that, it's not even that out-there of an idea, considering the iPhone from which the iPod Touch is based has one.
Production costs I'll give to you. It would probably drive the price up a good ~$50, and that's not very nice, considering the $100 price drop from the previous gen.
Maybe gen 3 will have a camera. Wait 'till next September, I guess.

If you want a camera get an iPhone
And if you want nike support get a ipod touch... Seriously the "get a iphone" trolling is over since apple clearly said that ONLY the ipod touch gen 2 will support it, even if you get the dongle it wont work on your iphone, So now both devices have propotary features that seperate them.
Besides if you dont like people talking about features they want on the ipod touch then shouldent you go to a iphone only forum. I wonder where you could find one of those... Oh yea, the sister site to ipodtouchfans, www.iphonefanatics.com. There is even a link at the top of the forum for your convienance.
Anyways it would had made sence if it did get a camera since pictures are considered media, and the touch is supposed to be "innovative", "revolutionary", and "the latest technology" . If I wanted just music I would had gotten a classic, I got the touch for innovation.
Btw has anyone mentioned the fact that the gen 2 evedently has mic support according to the specs on the new "apple in ear headphone/mic" page. I know you may be saying "the mic is for the iphone" but whats funny is the fact that the iphone isnt in the compatability area for the headphones, only the new shuffle and touch. This is prolly just a goof on apples part, but we can dream at least :P, considering your willing to drop down 79$ for it...

I just don't use my phone's camera because I never use my phone for anything other than making/receiving calls and text messages. I'm not a professional photographer; I don't give a damn about the quality of the camera, insofar as it has to at least be bearable (which, I think 2mp is certainly bearable).

Exactly. I'm not going to dock points from iPod Touch because it doesn't have a camera, in the exact same way I'm not going to buy an iPhone because I don't want to change carriers or deal with the business behind unlocking.
Speakers: Necessity. iPod Touch should have had them from the start. Better quality system sounds, as well as music from your pocket.
Camera: Meh, it sure would be nice, but so would a million and a half dollars, and either way, it's not a terrible thing I don't have either.
I totally disagree with OP. A camera is not a good trade for the speaker.

Well, since they're really pushing the games in the app store, it's kind of annoying or inconvenient (at least to me) to play games with headphones plugged in. The plug gets in the way and when you just want to play a quick game, you don't want to spend time finding the heaphones, unwrapping them, etc. So even though it would be nice to have a camera (trust me, I would LOVE a camera in the iPod), it's just not a high priority for most consumers as a speaker is.

Guess I'm the only one content without either a camera or speakers. I have a fucking Digital SLR to take photos with. Good photos.
And if I want to play my music loud it's at home most of the time and I play it through my surround system. If I go to a mate's place or anything they always have a system set up so we can play our iPods. Only thing it would be good for is gaming. Because we all know that people who play music through the speakers in their phones in public are just obnoxious dicks.

You may want to do more research on that topic. My friend has a Samsung MP3 player with a camera and bluetooth and volume controls. And if you really want to start that argument, iPod touch shouldn't have any internet/wi-fi based features like Safari, Maps, and Mail. Maybe the iTunes store cause it actually makes sense.

Next, I'm not too impressed by the speaker. What is the use of it? Aside from games, I can't see a purpose for it at all.
As for the people freaking out at every comment ("OMFG BUYZ A iPOHNE!!") what the hell is your problem? Some people enjoy taking pictures. AT&T doesn't have service everywhere, either. Some people just don't want a phone. Why bitch at them for wanting a camera?

From Apple's standpoint, the speaker makes far more sense. I'm not denying that. It's a brilliant marketing move. A tiny speaker that costs them less than a penny to add, and brings them into competition with Nintendo and Sony - taking in a whole new market.
From a business standpoint, it's ingenious. I'm just saying that I'd like a camera. :p

Your argument has no point, because ipods are considered "mobile media devices" and media is made up of music, videos, and pictures. So a camera would be a great addition to the ipod, if apple didn't think so then they would not had made this for the 5th gen ipod.
Besides if its only meant to be a music player then why does every ipod model "excluding the shuffle since it lacks a screen" also support videos, photos, AND music?
Product Picture:
http://store.apple.com/Catalog/US/Images/lm_altview_photoadapter.jpg
Teslanaut has a point tho, obviously apple is trying to turn the touch into a portable gaming platform and this is why they put in the speaker. The buttons and nike support were just side perks to make current ipod touch owners want to upgrade.
On a final note, someone was saying that "people would want a mic, and that would make it to much like a iphone". Well I hate to tell you this but if you shovel out the 80$ for the high deffinition in ear headphones the mic on them DOES work on the generation 2 ipod touch, if it didnt then the gen 2 would not be listed as the "made for" product. Not to mention the iphone and iphone 3g are not listed at all on its page, only the new nano, gen 2 ipod touch, and ipod classic are listed as compatable.

change is bad? if anyone would put a camera on an audio player, it would be apple. apple has changed technology in ways people wouldnt even imagine. why wouldnt u want a camera? its more things on the ipod. why wouldnt u want that? i dont see why people are hating on more advances to an ipod. maybe its because they have an iphone and think they are superior to us ipod users who cant afford 100 dollars a month. i would love to have an iphone, i would love to have internet anywhere, it would be a dream come true to have internet anywhere in my pocket, unfortunatly i dont have a job and i cant afford it.
