the problem is the chips only come in capacities of max 8 GB right now, however recently new leaps in flash technology means it might be possible to jump to way higher than that:
http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/samsung/samsungs-unleashes-worlds-densest-flash-memory-313879.php
Likely we'll see a jump to a 32 - 64 combo first and then from there it will be 128-256 GB.
There is also rumbling of a new type of flash memory that could bring up up to a Terrabyte within a couple of years.

All very exciting news.

If there comes one out, i'm sure to upgrade.
If I was going to get a touch for christmas, do you think I should wait it out and get the next gen or do you think it will be awhile until they come out with new ones

We are talking about hypothetical upgrades that won't likely happen until spring or Fall of 08. I don't know if Samsung is even up to speed on high density NAND memory yet. I doubt it and if they were it will take at least 3-6 months to get it up to speed.
So if you want it for christmas of this year, then wait no longer.
Let them have Ipod Touches!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

idk there will be an ipod touch with that size memory anytime soon. if they do make one with 32 megabytes its going to be alot bigger than its predecessors because like the nano the ipod touch uses flash memory, not actual hard drives. thats why the ipod video can hold so much more.

They'll definitely come out with higher capacity iPod Touches soon. That's how they do it with their iPods anyway.

do you think they would do a trade in?
like you send in yours and pay, say, $100?

They won't do a trade in, but if you buy your Ipod at Best Buy and get a warrenty you can take it in every year when a new one comes out and complain about the battery dying quickly, then they will upgrade it to whatever is out. I started with a 1st gen nano and have gone through every one since including a video and now have a touch. :)

You can expect a itouch with higher memory very soon. Technology is upgrading faster than you can blink your eyes. It will not surprise me to see one with 256Gb in a few years.
Of course if you keep waiting to buy a better one, you will wait forever. There is always going to be a better one in a few years.

Well, not forever... just until you die.
But yeah, it's like computers, or cars... even video games. The consumer's market has its fair share in it too, upgrades and obsoletes alike.

Well I don't think they will be bumping up the memory in the iPod Touch anytime soon, but this is probably what may happen:
Fall '08 - Release of the new 2nd Generation iPod Touch probably with same or similar memory, but with doubled battery life. New casing like the 2nd gen Nano maybe?
Fall '09 - Release of New 3rd Generation iPod Touch with probably with memory somewhere in between 64 - 256 GB. Trust me these things will jump drastically. Maybe a new iPod too? Seeing as the iPod Touch was released only two years after the release of the first Nano.

Im not sure if anyone has pointed this out yet but have you thought about what increasing the gigs on the touch will do economically. The iPhone has had enough problems with sales since the release of the 16gig Touch over the max8gig on the iPhone. By increasing it to 32 or to 64 would only further increase this problem with cheaper prices and it will begin to factor into the classic. People are willing to drop 16gig off their classic and fork out a little more money for the best technology. People who can generally afford the classic should have enough money, the only concern is space. The only way this would benefit is with the increase in size from the classic. just something to think about. It should be quite some time before the classic incereases its size as i think the sales of the 80gig is much higher than the 160 so it would be crazy to add thickness weight and price just to have even less people buying the classic. From memory In order, when it comes to sales the 8gig nano is at the top followed by the 80gig classic. so cutting the 80gig for a 160 and 240gig space is crazy with the touch sales doing great for the meantime. Only when it becomes reasonable for the classic to grow is when the touch will go up, and im sure the sales would just sky rocket with a 32gig but they have to factor in all the ipods and iphone with a decision like this.
