I had a word with the Quickpwn[dot]com admin yesterday after I infracted him for coming to our forums to try and hire PAID staff... That's how much money he has cashed in using the QuickPWN brand name.

Here's our email conversation (n.b. first email at the bottom and read up):

I cannot give the QuickPwn(dot)com domain away or change the name now because it will take a lot of time and effort to rebuild a new site from scratch. The DevTeam have changed the name to redsn0w, so I think that solves the problem (but DevTeam will still not be happy with my site). Now I just need to work on the CONTENT of the site and start updating it daily with useful guides, news/posts, tutorials, and stuff like that. It's hard to do this with a full-time job, and college but I plan on improving the site and making it better.

They of course are most likely perturbed by your 'theft' of the QuickPWn name and riding your site on the back of this, as much as they are with yellowsn0w(dot)net. They says as much in one of their recent blogs. I would suggest you rebrand and pass them your web-domain if you want to move in the correct direction. In the mean time I would suggest you put a large banner on your site explaining your position, your relation to the dev-team, the dev-teams stance on your site etc..

To be honest you're attracting a lot of traffic to your site that you don't deserve, i.e. from noobs looking for details on QuickPWN and the Dev-Team when they should be going to the dev-team blog. If you really wanted to do the right thing you would take down your site immediately, re-direct traffic from QuickPWN.com to the dev-team blog and set up a new site with a new name and branding, though your traffic would drop off a cliff overnight.

Is this something you would consider? If you are the person you profess to be from your previous email then this is what you would do.

Best regards,

SD

I originally started my site because I liked the QuickPwn software that the Dev Team released so I registered the .com and started a site with guides on it. I got loads of comments and helped a lot of people. It was fun troubleshooting all their problems and helping them out whenever I could. There are many other sites that redistribute the DevTeam software as well and also have ads (except they don't have the .com of the QuickPwn name). In fact there are many download sites that redistribute downloads and earn money off of the DevTeam's work. ThePirateBay itself earns money whenever people download from there. I have ads on there because I think I deserve to be compensated for my time. I also have to pay the hosting costs of the site.

I never once took credit for DevTeam's work and always gave credit to the proper people in my posts. Unfortunately the DevTeam does not like my site because of all the ads on there. It is easy for someone to say that I have done nothing for the community, but I believe I have (even if it is just hosting the downloads or helping them out in the comments/forums/twitter).

I've spent a lot of my time helping out. Tell me, what if someone like <redacted> got QuickPwn(dot)com domain? They would be selling this software and be millionaires by now. Guess what? I'll never do such thing, because I respect DevTeam's work and I won't ever do anything like that. Someone sent me $200 recently instead of $2 PayPal, but I returned their $200 instead of keeping it. I'm an honest person and would never do any scamming.

I recently did a free iPhone 3G S giveaway. My hosting bill increased a lot for this month and I'll be paying for that too. A lot of the money from advertising goes back in to the site. I have big plans for QuickPwn.com and the jailbreaking community and I hope to some day earn DevTeam's respect (though I doubt it'll ever happen). My goal is to turn QuickPwn.com in to a iPhone and iPod Touch related news site and update it frequently with news. I also hope to establish a good forums for members and help out whenever I can.

I understand that iPodTouchFans is not a filter for traffic to my site and I do not post ad links to my site. The only time I remember posting a link was during the 3.0 betas, after that I never posted a link. I won't be advertising or breaking any iPod Touch Fans rules, but thanks for the reminder.

I'm sorry to hear that you are disturbed by my site, and I know that you're not the only one. Please do tell me if you have any suggestions for my site and what I can do to make it better.

Thanks,
QP

Secondly, I want to let you know that I do not approve of your methods. Redistributing someone else's work in order to reap advertising revenues is not for the good of the community. You have contributed nothing to the jailbreak scene apart from stealing the name of a jailbreak GUI made by someone else and hosting said files on your webspace for your own benefit. Secondly your presence on our forums already perturbs me due to the dishonest policies underpinning your webspace. However, you are tolerated as you have done nothing malicious or intentionally harmful and are just a general thorn in the side of the overall scene.

So just to remind you: iPodtouchFans is not a filter for you to move traffic to your site. Ad links to your site are not permitted and I personally will remove them whenever I see them.
