Hello I'm new here.

I recently picked up a used 2G 16gb Touch with factory settings. I plugged it into my Mac and updated to 3.1.2 at the cost of $4.95.

I would like to know:

1. Am I unable to jailbreak it now because I updated?
2. Had I not updated, would the jailbreaking automatically bump my firmware to 3.xx from 2.xx thus saving me the $4.95
3. What should I do now? Am I stuck where I am?

Please be kind, this is all new to me. Thanks.

Just jailbreak with blackra1n. There's nothing wrong with upgrading and no the jailbreak does not give you free firmware.

Hi, one question. I have an iTouch 2G currently jailbroken with 3.0, I want to upgrade to 3.1.2 without losing everything on my iPod, is that possible? I've seen the blackra1n tutorials and they say that I must upgrade via iTunes, but doesn't that mean that first iTunes will install the "stock" firmware thus deleting everything installed that is enabled by the jailbreak (apps downloaded from Cydia)? I don't want an empty 3.1.2. Is that possible?

You can use aptbackup. Other than that I don't think there is another way...
