(im on XP so excuse me of im way off) but on my vista laptop the Administrator Folder contains the same thing.
So...
Unplug Device--> Open Administrative Tools (may be under control panel) --> click the "Services" shortcut --> Make sure; Apple Mobile Device & iPod Service are both set to Started. If they are not, right-click --> Start

Now close iTunes (if you ahve it open) --> open itunes again and connect the device. now it should pop up... if you dont here a "ding" or "ping" you may have a faulty connection cord.
I've tried starting the apple mobile device service that way but it won't let me. I forgot what the message says but it doesn't let me start the service.

Could I be experiencing the same problem with the Apple Mobile Device not being used? How can I check this? (I'm on Mac 10.6)

I still find it weird that iTunes detects my iPod after a clean uninstall/reinstall (inc deleting Apple Mobile Device), but decides to not work after a restart.

I haven't got around to restoring yet, busy schedule. But I really want to avoid restoring just because I'm too lazy to fix everything afterwards..

The message I get when I try to start the service on Windows 7 is included in the image attached. vvvvvvvvvvvvvv And the second one says that the service is running, but the iPod/iPhone is not detected.

I am running Vista, and when I sync my itouch to itunes, the synching process will start, but when it's time to back up my itouch, I get an error message that system can not back up due to itouch being disconnected. .. what gives?
