Try using QuickPwn first.
iTunes 8 doesn't like PwnageTool, but after a device is pwned, it'll play nicely with it. |

its not the macbook or the software, it itunes 8. you have to use quickpwn to pwn your ipod. i guess apple found some way to stop custom firmwares from being installed..
