Default Alternative to "Hear" (For Mac) in Ubuntu?

Basically, I want to know if there is a Linux (preferably Debian) alternative to Hear, a program that enhances sound output, for Mac (http://www.joesoft.com/products/hear.php). I'd be glad to know if there's a program that can do this for Linux, or at least a driver or something that can enhance m sound output.

Hi,

For highest sound quality use jackd + xmms + jack-rack. Also install cmt, ladspa and caps plugins: there are hundreds available, for free !

As for MP3, consider using a lossless audio compression encoder like FLAC instead...

Ok, I installed XMMS, Jack, Jack-rack, and xmms-jack. I configured each correctly for my setup, but when I add racks to jack-rack, the effects dont alter the music output. I've tried everything, but I can't seem to get jack-rack effects to work. If you guys know how to fix this...please help me!
