Hey everyone, I know a lot of people have the issue of not having wifi at home. This is a walk-through of sorts to help those without wifi access at home.
There is, however, a hardware requirement: your computer must have a wireless card. This is because I'm going to explain how to share your internet connection with your ipod touch. This is done by essentially turning your computer into a wireless access point (WAP). Mac users: (NOTE: This method for macs may not work. I've had mixed results when using it myself. I'm trying to troubleshoot it. I'll update as soon as possible.) ![]() Step 1: Open up your System Preferences. Step 2: Click on "Sharing" Step 3: Click on the "Internet" tab Step 4: Select "Built-in Ethernet" from the drop-down menu Step 5: Check the box next to "Airport" (Optional) encrypt the signal:Step 6: Click Start ![]() Step 7: Click on the "Services" tab Step 8: Check the box next to Person Web Sharing Step 9: Click Start Mac users, Congratulations! You now have a working wifi network in your home. Connect to your network with the touch and if you enabled encryption, type in the same password you used when setting up. If you haven't done so already, jailbreak your ipod touch. Enjoy! Windows XP users: ![]() Step 1: Open up Control Panel Step 2: Open up Network Connections Step 3: Right click on "Wireless Network Connection" Step 4: Click on "Properties" Step 5: Click on the "Wireless Networks" tab Step 6: Click "Add" Step 7: Name your network in the "Network name (SSID)" box If you do not want encryption: Step a: Select "Shared" from the "Network Authentication" menuIf you do want encryption: Step a: Select "Shared" from the "Network Authentication" menustep 8: Click Ok again ![]() Step 9: Open up Network Connections again Step 10: Right click on "Local Area Network Connection" Step 11: Click on Properties Step 12: Click on the "Advanced" tab Step 13: Check both boxes under the "Internet Connection Sharing" section. Step 14: Click Ok Step 15: Right click on "Wireless Network Connection" Step 16: Click on "View Available Wireless Networks" Step 17: Click "Refresh Network List" Step 18: Connect to the network you just created Yay, XP users! You've now managed to create a wifi network at home. Connect your touch to the network and enter the same password you used while creating the network. You can now jailbreak without a problem. Enjoy! Again, this solution only works for people who have wifi capable computers. I'll try to add a guide for users running Vista. I have no person experience with it, so I can't do at the moment. Hope this helps and please, let me know what you all think. EDIT: I found the Windows help site for vista users trying to set up ad hoc networks. Look here Hope this helps the Vista users out there. I don't have access to vista, so I can't do a guide myself. If someone would like to add a vista guide, I'd be happy to place it in the first post, with proper credit given, of course.

a few years back I heard of this ad hoc thing and I wanted to use it for gaming with my friends. I don't have wifi in my dorm so I decided to try and see if this would work. It did and so i decided to share the wealth with everyone else.
The only downside is that it uses dynamic IP so I have to check the IP address of my touch every time I want to ssh in. That's just a minor inconvenience, though, when compared to going to the library every time i want to ssh. |

woohoo, it works.
Only hassle is if I need to go on internet, then I have to plug in Lan line. When using WINSCP & Wifi to acces my Ipot, I then need to unplug my Lan line for it to work. |

@floodie: are you using your macbook to share Internet or are you using a different computer to share and your MacBook can connect but your iPod touch can't?
@lachlan: That might work with a mac, not sure with a pc. With a mac, in the step where I say to select built-in Ethernet, I believe you must select wireless or perhaps airport (i'll confirm this later, i'm on the touch) for it to work. With a pc, I'm not sure if it will work, because the host has to connect to the ad hoc network in order for it to be created. @fatfrank: from what I gather, you have wifi at home and if that's the case then this is unnecessary. I have my laptop plugged in to LAN all the time and use my wireless card for my touch to connect. You should not have to unplug in order to ssh into the iPod.
