I found a way to make Cydia stop crashing at least for awhile. When at the desktop hold the sleep/wake button and after the shutdown slider comes up start holding the home button, (now both at once), then after 5 seconds the shutdown slider will disappear and you will be at the desktop. It should work now
So you know what you are doing this is the new method to completely close a program which also works on the desktop to close stray processes and clear up system resources.

another problem that could exist is that too many ppl are trying to access cydia at the same time causing the network to overload and crash

Wrong. Cydia is what you would call a "Client". Even if the server IS being hammered, Cydia, the app on your iPod, will not be affected.
