There's a reason for that. The area was struck by a massive earthquake in 2005/6 (not sure about the exact year). Most of the smaller temples were destroyed... The temple compound has been largely re-built, but markers & boards warn people of areas where it is not safe to venture yet. Hence, those boards describing from a distance what the temples stood for.
I totally see your point though. The temples are beautiful however & were built in the 9th century. It's a world heritage site much like nearby Borobodur, which is even more massive & awesome. Unfortunately, it's an earthquake prone area.
