Default Ubuntu panels become unresponsive after launching Firefox

So recently I upgraded to 8.04 and everything was working fine (even the wireless) but one day after I opened Firefox (3 beta 5) I noticed that none of the panels (top and bottom) responded and I had to hard crash to turn off or restart my laptop. Today however the panels went off as usual after launching Firefox but after 20 minutes or so they just came back (as in they responded to clicks)....sometimes they even work after I launch Firefox....and also this happened several days after I updated...I couldn't find any help on the Ubuntu forums.

Do you have visual effects (compiz) turned on? I find that they cause a lot of problems with my desktop panels.

Yes in fact I do...ok I'll see if turning them off fixes the problem.

did you happen by any chance to install an unstable version of firefox? or additional plugins? Happened to me a long time ago when i first started using Ubuntu and if its not one of those things, you might wanna check your logs to see if you are having hardware failure or something more serious

Yeah I just started using Ubuntu last week so the Firefox I have is the one that came originally...there are some Gnome updates just now so I'll see if that helps.

hopefully it will...sometimes with Ubuntu and its software an update would kill the program...but a few hours later, there was another update and it fixed it again and everything was peachy
